Does anybody think that holographic tinsel offers a significant advantage over plain tinsels?
I know some anglers that swear by patterns tied with silver holographic tinsel for springers and fresh grilse. I remember catching kelt after kelt on the Tay one day with Garry Dog's tied with holographic mylar for the body. When I tried one with normal tinsel ... nothing. When I put the pattern back on with a holographic body ... bang - more kelts!
When it comes to real fish, I always thought that such small variations in pattern were insignificant, but can't say for sure.

Fruin,
i know some good fishers who swear by the holo stuff for silver stoat's etc. I can see how holo can add some sparkle- maybe that extra glint is what triggers the fish to attack.
i quite like the pearl tinsel. It comes up differently depending on the thread you are using. Looks great over black.

Macd,
I agree about the pearl tinsel. I also like it over white floss for my sea trout patterns.

Try holo/pearl tinsel over bright yellow (u/v) tying thread, I use that combination on two or three varients of both Salmon and Sea Trout flies. The results are (to coin a phrase) awesome ;D and flies tweaked this way have worked for me and pals all over Scotland from the Dee to the Nith (oh, and Tierra Del Fuego, Falkland Islands etc). I'm increasingly a great believer in the benefits of a "wee dash o' flash" in all my flies. I hate to say it, but even some of my trout dry flies have had the treatment I'm a heretic I tell you

Betanut,
That'll give me something else to try!!! It will all end with more bankside pondering of fly choice.
Every year I do the same thing - start with a plethora of crazy new patterns and end up using the same 4 or 5 patterns later on. ;D

Guys, If you do try my wee twist (with success!) please let me know!! A wee bit of colour in the water helps, the idea first had an outing on the estuary of the Ythan 10 years ago, but I'm sure someone else must have done the same Mind you, I do end up sticking to old faithfuls (especially on the Don for some reason) as well
