I use large rooster hackles from lakeland flytying and these work fine although they dont look the same as some shop bought pbp as some resemble toilet brushes  |

At the moment im using hen hackles Colin, although i just recieved a few cock capes with lovely webby hackles that will do the buisness.
Suppose it depends on what movement you are after and what flow you are fishing really.
