I've ordered a few hooks off e-bay for attempting a few flies for the Spring. I used to tie Trout flies in my younger days... so i thought i'd try and create a couple of my own "distinct" patterns! The big question is...... does Jungle cock really matter?? I see most flies seem to have it these days..... is it just fashionable? or does it really make the difference? Surely if a fly flashes past a Salmon in peaty water it doesn't make a difference?? Your thoughts please oh wise ones! Merry Christmas all! John.

its a confidence thing if the fly looks good then you will have more confidence , but it dosent really matter if the fish are having it and your presentation is correct then bingo , i dont belive you need it but it does give them a target to home in on but i wouldnt worry if you dont use it , cheers billy p

Since learning many years ago that the Salmonids along with most other predatory fish have a part of their brain dedicated to identifying spots and circles, I have always added 'eyes' to my tubes and large singles.
I use 'Tippex' applied with a sawn-off cocktail stick and find this to be very durable (unlike jungle cock) when over coated with tying/nail varnish and is easily replaced should it suffer damage from teeth. It's also a much cheaper option than using jungle cock. I admit that these flies do not not look as pretty as those tied with jungle cock but pretty has never been a priority for me. I prefer to tie flies with mobile materials and, like springer, concentrate more on profile and presentation.
Dave.

When I went to M Frodin's demonstartion recently, he asked if it was necessary to use JC to which I said no. He said "I don't think it f**king matters, but I f**king like it!" so on it went.
I see he uses it on his fly in this month's T&S...
One of the flies which I like to use JC on is the Pot Bellied Pig - I also like the positioning of the JC on this fly.

thanks for your thoughts guys..... i think they do look better with jungle cock eyes..... maybe the fish think the same? i'd like to think they'd appreciate the effort and the extra expense! I've tied my first three flies in another post..... feel free to have a look!
