I am fishing the Grantown water in early May. Other than the usual Ally's (standard and yellow), Cascades, PBPs, Silver Stoats, Sunray Shadows and Willie Gunns in a mixture of tubes and size 4-10 doubles, are there any "must have" patterns about which I should know?
Also, so far as the Sunray Shadow is concerned. how long should the wing be if tied on 1-1.5" tubes. Pictures seem to suggest 3+ inches but any more precise indication? What is the best material for the wing (aside from monkey fur)? Goat?
Thanks in advance.

Thnaks for starting this thread. I'm fishing the same beat in May so this is helpful. I fished it one day last summer (low water/hot) and had the feeling the beat loooked like a "shrimpy" looking water whatever that means I just thought Pot Bellied Pig on an intermedite line...

Thank you all for your replies.
James, sparse yellow/red/orange/black bucktail wingtail, gold ribbed body, orange front hackle and blue guinea fowl throat hackle. Is that right? Some of the other seem to have squirrel hair wings. I guess, however, that the salmon aren't that particular.
Green banger? Isn't that what Willie Gunn drives?
Thanks again.

James of the Speyvalley,
Just love these neat tapered heads on your Carron Shrimps. The hallmark of a good tier. Photies aint bad either. Well done.

springer dont be afraid to fish the dulnain as well, this is included in your spey permit. about 50m up from the junction there is a good pool, also about half a mile up stream you have the bullworks and so on.....

Thanks for the link Jim, I like the Munro killer but that Katy D looks even deadlier. I'll be tying some up for the Tummel & Spey.

springer remember when fishing the lower water at grantown (from the new bridge down) you will have to wear a life jacket as it is compulsary. if it was me i would spend the whole week at grantown, you have picked the BEST week of the year m8. ;D ;D. best pools are the lurg, long pool, bridge pool, big stream, tarric mor, little stream, upper bend, lower bend, and the dulnain mouth holds alot of fish at all levels. in total you have about 6 miles on the spey and 12 on the dulnain, if you are going to fish the dulnain try just the other side of dunlin bridge (the village) just park in the layby at the road side, the river is alot smaller than the spey and is mostly rocky pools but it does have a good head of salmon and seatrout. ;D hope this helps springer. scotty.
