Hi all,
I am relatively new to salmon fly tying and have some materials but i am comfused when it comes to dyed capes for allys, cascades ect... what kind of cape would you recomend, probably looking at orange, yellow and red unless anyone else has any other colours that always come in handy?

Buy the best you can afford - the fly is the most important part of fishing. Forget the £1000 rod and £500 reel - the fly is the only thing the fish sees (if you're casting is adequate) so get it right.
I use the following capes in order of most usage:
Orange Black Yellow Red Blue Purple
That's about it, and 75% of flies (at least) use one of the first three colours (if it has a hackle).

Hunt around websites and you'll find bargains. Buying from USA fishing stores is often considerably cheaper too. Remember you'll get 100s of flies from one cape.

This may be a trifle to late for you, but "Whiting" are doing a large cape bred for this purpose it's called "American Hackle" most of the larger suppliers keep it and they are abou £14/5 for a grade 1 . 2s and 3s being cheaper (silver/bronze) I tried a bronze one and they're brilliant value, they tie easily etc etc

The best capes I have come across for salmon flies are the Silver Grade Whiting Rooster Saddles. These are bred specifically for salt water and salmon flies and you don't really tend to see these over here but can pick them up of the net for 10 dollars (thats less than a fiver these days ) or a mighty $13.99 for the natural black which makes a mockery of the prices we are charged for chinese capes. These have plenty of feathers big enough to tie any salmon fly that takes your fancy unlike some of the genetic saddles that we tend to get across here. I bought them originally to tie big deceivers and semper fleyes but they are super for salmon flies too Check them out at www.anglersworkshop.comcheers Splash
