Stu47 I cant say that they've caught me very many fish, but I keep fishing with them, since I think they look really nice and it feels like they should be good fishing flies. With the heron hackle and all, and they are good fun tying. Maybe we could keep this thread going by posting classic Dee and Spey type patterns here? I just have to get more of a friend with the macro function on my camera then I'll post some, some patterns don't do to well in the scanner

Stu47 and splicedsharpe,
I'm very much fan of the Spey and Dee style of flies as well.
If you do get your cameras sorted, I'd very much like to see your results!

Hi Borrowed a camera which seem to work a bit better When I started with Dee flies I started on quite small sizes 4-6 and I found it hard to get them the way I liked. But then I tried larger hooks and found it easier to get proportions and tie in wings, more space i guess. And I found both Pryce tannatt "How to dress salmon flies" and lately "Spey flies and Dee flies..." by Shewey as good help on the way. Just hope there's some water this season I guess they need some good flow to fish well and don't work as anchors instead. Here's a Jock O'Dee on a Sawada single 3/0. And here's a Tri-Colour also on a Sawada 3/0 Jan

Nice flies,i just bought some daichi spey hooks 3/0 to try,the bigger hooks do seem to work better. Is the Pryce Tannet book worth buying i was looking at buying it from England last week? I bought some hooks direct from Sawada, dee hooks in 2 and 4 a little longer shanked hook Got the liking and idea of tying spey flies after seeing the flies in autumns on the spey by knox

Thanks Stu Never tried the daichi hooks are those the same as the Alec Jackson hooks? Looking forward to see your Spey flies. I like Pryce-Tannatt a lot, as a reference to the look of older flies, the picture plates and just reading it, it's well worth having I think, and if get hold of some blind eye hooks and gut I'll know how to use it Haven't read Knox, have to ask you the same, is it worth buying, it seems a bit pricier than Pryce-...? Sewinangler do you fish and tie them also?

Stu. Nice one, always wanted a fish on the Lady C. Had a bit of a fight with the mallard last night and I used 2 books to try to get it right....Pryce-Tannatt doesn't discuss Speyflies and the technique to tie them as much as he does Dee flies, still think it's worth having. I have to recommend J. Sheweys "Spey flies and Dee flies" again, there's a lot of excellent pictures on how to handle feathers and different ways to mount both Spey and Dee fly wings. And if you want even more references, theres also Ververkas "Spey flies and how to tie them" If you want I could mail you the pic's on the wing mounting? Just pm me your e-mail and I'll mail them tomorrow. (I'll scan so I don't think it's a good idea to put them up here) Jan

Nice Jan,i am just getting the hang of them now,but it would be good to see other techniques,i think really a little trial and error and see how you can manipulate the feather when its tied in, on a double for example

Hi, The double looks like it could be a real killer even in smaller sizes than that . I like the single even better, nice curve on the wing! I now see that the wing on my fly reaches to far back. Back to the vise I'll try to do a step by step and post on the forum as well. Jan

Dont think its the wing to long, the feathers look like the hackle under is pushing the wing up,i started stripping one side of the hackle, then it is easier to work the hackle fibres down, sent you my e mail just

Hi Your probably right, i tend to over dress a bit, might be solved when they've been fished a bit. Heres an old trout wet fly "converted" Spey style, Mallard Claret and Blue The Glen Grant, should be a teal wing but i was out of it, so mallard instead. and another MCB, i have a special place for the MCB since i caught my first ever salmon on it in Norway, but that time on a size 12 double Wilson lowater, these are all on 3/0. Sewinangler do you fish and tie them also? I don't fish the flies but having purchased John Sheweys book several years ago, I have been very much a fan of the tying style. The rivers I fish, come the summer, drop to levels where fishing a fly of the size Spey patterns generally are wouldn't be a good idea. However I have been experimenting to take the style and use it on smaller flies especially for seatrout. Here's a few simple examples: Blue CS Spey Silver Stoat Purple CS Mallard and Gold Spey Black and Silver CS The above are tied on size 7 Salar doubles. Small enough for low water conditions and with the movement and profile I like so much that Spey and Dee patterns have. I have a variety of others that are still in the experimental stage. Salars are the only hook that I have found that have the necessary curved profile. The down side is that the shank is too short to get the effect I want! If there's any hook manufacturers looking in, can you start production on a spey/dee style hook model but scale it down to 6's, 8's and 10's?
