take a short length of nylon, maybe 15 or 20lb bs, tie it in down one side of the shank - then form a small horizontal loop, maybe 1/4" long, and tie the end of the nylon in along the other side of the shank - the horizontal loop keeps the tail from catching and wrapping on the hook bend - tie the tail in above the loop - i use it all the time on tarpon flies but not often found it necessary on salmon flies - the pics show stronger nylon than i would usually use. cut the ends of the nylon at a shallow angle and they blend in much better than shown above - then a drop of superglue and allow to dry before tying the fly

I don't use this method as I find it doesn't "look right" - just nonsense, I'm sure, but I get these things stuck in my head...
What I do for shrimp flies is to start the fly by tying in the rib (usually fine wire) and making the tag with three or four neat turns. I then put on the tail which sits over the tag - the tail fibres (usually bucktail) very seldom wrap round the hooks.

in chris manns book "shrimp and spey flies for salmon" he suggests that when tying in long bucktail tails on treble hooks to tie 50% of the bucktail in between the top two hooks, then split the remaining 50% and tie in either side below.

While you don't need this technique with buck tail but with others calf tail squirrel and some of the synthetic fibers i am sure it will make a big difference
