Evenin chaps. This is a mortifyingly stupid question but i finally upgraded to a brilliant vice after years of tying on a wee cheapie. So now I've got a bobbin holder and no idea what i'm meant to do with it! Is it simply for resting my bobbin against the metal bar? Or has the round disc with the groove in it got something to do with it? It's driving me mad trying to work the thing out Cheers

rest the thread in the groove, think the idea is gives more room round the hook, not 100% dont have one

Also useful if using 360 degree rotation - the bobbin rests on the holder and won't so easily wrap round the turning fly.

Did you purchase a Dyna King vice?
I have one with the bobbin holder as well. It's meant to help you hang the thread and bobbin holder away from the flie when you are wrapping tinsel, ribbing or winding a hackle.
I find it just gets in the way and don't bother with it. However, sloggi's advice is good. I hadn't thought about that.

I've found it more of a hinderance myself to be honest. That's why i thought i was using it wrong I hadn't thought of using it when roatating, nice one sloggi. It's not a Dyna king, It's a Tallon vice, the Tay model. you might not of heard of them but it's made my fly tying so much more pleasurable

I have a Dyna King which has the bobbin holder, I tried it for a while but found it just got in the way so I have taken it off . I suppose if you got used to it then it may be helpful at times (like Sloggi suggests) E

I eventually took mine off too Easky. I'm sure there's some brilliant uses for the thing but until some genius discovers them, mine is gathering cobwebs. Defeated by a piece of metal, and not for the first time either

The main use for them is when using rotary tying. A half hitch on the shank to stop the thread unravelling and rotate the hook to wrap the material on. Good for wrapping floss, dubbing brushes or ribbing. Unless the vice is true/in-line rotary you wouldn't need one.
Unless of course you have the Nor Vice when it is essential.

to be honest , i only use the rotary function to make sure both sides of my fly are the same. Nothin worse than finishin a fly and findin out the far side is shite!
