Any smallish shrimp pattern will work fine on the Annan most of the time

Welcome to the site Annanman.
Cascades, orange, yellow allies and silver stoat variants have worked for me Annanman. I fish a silver stoat with a red hackle on a size 10 wee double which has caught Grilse and Sea Trout when the water has been low.

Yes, most definitely AA, I normally use a size 12 cascade with the silver stoats variant on the dropper in low water.

Annan Angler, For another few ideas, here's a wee selection of my favourite grilse flies, tied on Partridge BMD's #10 & #8's, my favourite is of course the cascade variant.

Very nice flies indeed.
I like BMD hooks myself, but I got snagged in a tree last season and managed to straighten a hook, which worried me slightly. I think they were actually designed for competition trout fishing?

Cheers macd, I'm looking at the picture again and the hooks appear to look out of proportion (a bit big!), must be the lighting, saying that, Im nae great shakes when it comes to photography

elwyman, They were indeed originally for trout fishing however, interesting comment, I have always found them quite reliable, i use them on my Snake flies too and never had a problem. Same has also been mentioned about the Salar doubles , but again, in my limited experience, I've found them to be fine. I will however be keeping an eye on them more than ever

Clydebuilt - I was probably using 15lb leader at the time, so it bent under a fairly severe test load!

Sounds good to mespringer, They do "look" strong hooks if that makes sense and I do have confidence in them. Good job your running line was 50lb
