Just been combining differnt styles again (this fly tying forum has a lot ot answer for!). I've got more flies than I will ever use already, Granters must have one fly for every cast he will make this season! Trying to mix the long mobile hackles of a spey style with the long tail of a shrimp. Andy

very nice andy, looks like a winner.
Lovely style would be worth tying up in other colour schemes.

I think it's very nice too I haven't got too much experience with the salmon (but I'm picking it up as I go along!) and can't comment on the colour schemes a couple of you have mentioned. Is there such a thing as a colour convention throughout the season? For example Why wouldn't it work at other times? What would work at other times? In the early season is black, yellow and green a good combo as opposed to orange and reds? ???Perhaps I need to start another thread unless there's one already on here? Can anyone advise? Many thanks in advance.

Cheers all.
The beard hackle is silver mallard dyed yellow. Teal would work just as well but I just happened to find a drake mallard squashed on the road so I have lots of silver mallard to play with.
The hook is indeed a K Sawada. I’ve only just started using these and I like the shape but some of the soldering is a bit clumsy and inconsistent on the size 6’s I have. They are still perfectly usable and all the smaller ones are fine though so maybe just a duff batch.
As a black and yellow fly is always recommended for spring and summer fish and clear water I thought I’d give it a go on the chalk streams. I think the colour of the water has some bearing on fly colour too. In rivers that get a very black peat stain like the Dart yellow flies seem to disappear whereas orange ones take on a real glow. The Halladale is another one, yellow flies in there just look dull and washed out. Exmoor rivers get a much lighter peat stain, it is more orange or ginger, and there yellow flies do stand out well although I still like an orange one!

Thanks for the advice on colours. From your comments, perhaps that's why the Cascade is popular early season? On the advice above, I tied this Cascade/Comet type waddington: Not strictly black and yellow I know. One of the reasons I asked is because a few friends of mine are travelling to fish the Tummel at the end of March and was wondering what sizes and colours the flies should be tied for the Tummel?

One of the reasons I asked is because a few friends of mine are travelling to fish the Tummel at the end of March and was wondering what sizes and colours the flies should be tied for the Tummel? As you know it will depend on water height and temp, but size 8 will be fine on the tummel if the conditionsa are right. Late March will even see floating lines if the conditions are right. Flies, well cascade and other shrimp patterns and a few tubes, black/yellow, garry dog, WG etc Your friends wouldn't be the welsh lads who were up last year catching them on fluo. pink from memory ? Good luck and hope you get the conditions right.

Thanks for the advice jock.
They were up around the same time last year, the best fish went 20.2lb. As to the fluoro pink......they're not saying ;D
My apologies for hijacking the thread....back to "another black and yellow"

Don't worry about hijacking the thread, we can't have too many flies! Very nice waddington. I like the over and under style.
