Ally, I'd like to be there when you try lifting the really bonnie flies out to cast again, I've watched a few guys(who could cast more than a bit) casting these Frodin things into the Boatlands stream then trying to get them up out of the waterand it wasnae bonnie I promise you !

you need to buy all the kit from the same company- Rod, reel, shooting head etc. the scandanvians use underhand casts and fast rods with short head lines to propel this kind of fly. They lift far less line. Im working on a fast-actioned catapault to see if that helps fire these babies across the river- but no doubt guideline will get there first. ;D

Dennis, I think you are right. It could be a bit of fun trying to get these up to the surface. This style of fly might be good for hanging out the back of the boat. Might be a good idea to mount them and keep them on the mantle piece. Would be interesting to see if these flies cast better with the short Scandinavian shooting heads

I once saw Paul Young fishing with a chap for Pike in the Highlands. He was using a electonic boat to take his bait out and dropping it in the right place. Might be worth a go with one of these!! Guideline it was my idea first

That is one thing I noticed with them as well Dennis. They don't come out of the water too cleanly, not too great with the medium or long belly lines. Maybe the Scandanavians with their shooting head lines can handle them a bit easier. Hi Graham Lots of things are easier with Shooting Heads

Some of these turbo disc flies look like minor works of art, but will all that ostrich herl stand up to the rigours of casting?
The drag factor, when lifting to recast, had crossed my mind as well.

Hi Graham Lots of things are easier with Shooting Heads Name the first world champion speycaster to win the championship using a shooting head? Perhaps easy is not always the best, it is easier to crawl than walk, but is crawling the best way to get to the river?

Great news Thought it was just me that found that i could not cast these. The drag is stunnig! Sounds like these flies are not easy to get up to the surface. I would have thought that by pulling as much of the head/belly into the line and then roll casting several times until the line was on the top and then go into your single/double/snake roll and these things should go. One thing that strikes me is that the fly might hinge very easily. I suppose by adapting our casting style there may be a possibility of a half decent cast to get these things out to where we want them. Practice makes perfect. If all else fails out comes the spinning rod and a bouncing Betty and off we go

Very nice, particularly like the orange one bit more life in that one, what is the yellow hackle? Ostrich The Ostrich seems a bit expensive and not always of good quality. Just thought I'd let you know of another site that deals with these feathers at a much cheaper price. I don't have any connections!!! ;D www.ostrichesonline.co.uk/shop/cat?cmd=stdsearchClick on Feathers, then Ostrich, loose, Individual and Bulk or just do a search for Ostrich Drabs (the small 3" wide ones used on the Turbo Cone flies) Hope it's useful?

Graham, do you use that big single hook for tying purposes? If so, what is it exactly? I bought the veniard tube fly adaptor and found it to be pants!
