I have been using this varnish (head cement) for years and have noticed that the red varnish takes an age to dry. The black and clear varnish are fine and usually dry in a few hours but the red varnish takes more than 24 hours.
It's a real pain, is there another product on the market that dries quicker?
Any help/info/advice would be appreciated

I gave up with the red too. I now just use red silk if I want a red head. I think it looks neater anyway, if you accidently get coloured varnish on the dressing there isn't much you can do about it.

Exerod, I know what you mean but I feel that the red varnish gives a 'target' for the fish. But then again, I could be wrong SAY

Exerod, I know what you mean but I feel that the red varnish gives a 'target' for the fish. But then again, I could be wrong SAY Spot on Say - the red is pretty weird stuff. Not only does it not dry for ages, it also seems not to build-up a smooth even head. I used to use red once and then use clear varnish a couple of times. Now I use red thread and clear varnish. Can't help with an alternative, though.

Its mothers day tommorow ,so when you go to the chemists and pick a red nail varnish you can pretend its for her. get one that has nylon in it ,one coat of that + a coat of Hard as nails nail varnish should do thew trick ,using red silk is the easiest way tho, personally I hardly ever use black thread for any tying these days .

I always use super glue for my heads. Coloured thread and a coating of the Super glue.

When using the red cellire varnish, always shake the bottle before each use/fly. I usually give a clear coating, followed by a red, followed by another clear. Works for me

You could try Loon Outdoors hard head varnish.
Use the veniards clear varnish first and then use the loon varnish. It is like a liquid plastic/pvc ! . Gives a good coating and looks brilliant. Comes in black as well.

Tend to go with red or fluo-fire orange thread & clear floo-gloo cement mostly now, but you could try "Sally Hansen-Hard as Nails" "red patent creme" nail varnish. I got some out of superdrug a while back & works fine, best 2 coats over white thread as it is semi-translucent .

I tend to use coloured tying thread and then just clear varnish over the top. I do remember somebody telling me that with the coloured varnish is was important to give it a clear coat first then once dried give it the colour varnish. Aparently the clear soaks into the thread better. You could try this and see it it helps E
