I saw a pic of this in T&S, does anyone know how to tie one? It's one of those that has hooked the angler and will probably never hook me a fish, mainly due to me not going out if it's below 5 degrees C . Cheers, Dan

I fish this fly in Feb (usually morning) when the air and water temps are at their lowest.
I've yet to witness anyone land a springer on this fly but it has accounted for a few kelts.
It does look good in the water and is very visible

Here it is. Works very well, especially on the Tweed. Works equally well on the Tay. Try it when there is some snow on the ground

when tying in the mylar tubing at the rear of the fly the correct tying is to use red tying silk and leave the mylar tubing a bit longer to create a tail. then finish the fly off as sloggi has posted.

It is a good fly. It accounts for a lot of fish early season in Russia when the water is really cold.

Thanks very much for the info guys, I'll have a go at a few tonight.
Apart fom cold days, is there a specific way of fishing this fly, should it be deeper or slower? Does it work better in clear or coloured water? Sorry to be a pest, question after question.
NOBODY expects the spanish inquisition ;D.

I have always tended to fish in on an intermediate or sinking line. I do not see any reason why it would not work on a flaoting or sinktip. I have used in in clear water. This fly looks amazing when in the water

There will always be a place in my box for this fly, since it is what I got my first fly caught springer on. Fishing the River Isla in early April 2004, the water was medium height and clearish; fish were showing but had refused earlier offerings (including the spinner ) Decided to try the Ice Maiden having copied it from the t & s and a 3/4 inch copper tube fished on a sink tip tempted a fine 8lber ;D. Hope this helps salmondan Tight Lines

Clydebuilt used a blue plastic tube- really nice work. Cheers McD, Havent been posting much as im on a ship in the Gulf of Mexico and the internet access is p1sh. However, i may have a picture of my variation of the Ice Maiden (from the first Fly Swap) on my pen drive and i will post when i get the chance. I used: Tube - 1 Blue Johnston/Johnston Ear bud plastic tube Body - Pearly Mylar tubing (Med) tied off with Chartreuse 8/0 Uni thread and covered with Sally Hansen HAN Thread - Uni 8/0 Black Underwing- Green Highlander Deer Hair Midwing- Chartreuse Deer Hair Top Wing- White Deer hair Various sizes to suit conditions and the pearl/blue effect does look pretty good if i say so myself!! I've taken a few early springers on the Tay, Tummel, Eachaig, Orchy and Stinchar with it and a few back end fish too Always seems better in lower light, i suppose its similar to fishing a Junction Shrimp, must be the whitewing. I like the look of the previous posted tube with the blue buck. I tend to fish it with a FS poly tip off a floater or Slow Inter depending on the pool depth. Clydebuilt
