What is the difference between capes and saddles, am I right in thinking saddles offer bigger, longer hackles? For years I have only used packs of feathers for my poor, but fish-catching, offerings but after buying a metz grade 2 hen cape I was astounded how much easier it is to tie a hackle with a thin stalk. I am therefore preparing myself to get the wallet out and invest in a few (mainly) hen capes/ saddles- any suggestions as to the best source? Thanks.

Capes and saddles come from different parts of the bird. The ideal for salmon flies is a Chinese cock cape. The hackles are a wee bit more stiffer. The hen capes tends to be a bit more softer and bushier. If you want a fly that has plenty of movement then a hen is well worth trying. I use Metz capes for my trout flies as they tend not to have big enough hackle for some of the salmon files that I tie such as size 6 or 8. To be honest is paying for a Metz Worth it? Try a Chinese cock cape, you will get the same result. Try Ebay. There are a few sellers who supply capes & Saddles

I use veniards chinese cock necks for hackles on all my salmon flies. They come in a good range of colours, affordable and are of an adequate quality for tying most patterns.Trout flies however do sometimes need a better grade of feather to meet the precise pattern requirements a metz cape is a joy to work with when tying small dries etc

I have Whiting farm american rooster capes i use for my salmon flies, they are big heavily feathered capes.Cost a bit more than chinese capes but i think in the long run the amount of feathering in these will pay.Last one i got cost 17 quid from lakeland, that was without VAT
