Lo folks, Here's my first attempt at a Green Bodied Willie Gunn inspired by too much rain/too little fishing and readin through old FF&FT mags. Comments (good or bad!) as always appreciated: I also found a box of Size 7 Salars so they got the message too ;D Here's hoping they will bring me some success next week in the "big" water. Cheers Clydebuilt

I like slim flies so can't help but wonder if one or two are a mite overdressed. The Pearl/Green Bodied Willie Gunn may have a problem in that the hair length underneath matches the length on top, with the result that it may not fish the right way up, also the hair may catch on the bend and cause it to spin in the water.
They do look nice, you've got me in the mood now. I like the Cascades with all silver body.

I think they look good and should def catch fish As already mentioned tying is a personal thing but some minor comments would be: - I would try and leave more room at the heads as some of them are a bit near the eye, this is easier said than done though when you are using a big wing - I would say some are a bit heavily tied, again this is a personal preference but I would fine down the materials just a bit, saying this if you are using them in big water then they will have a 'good presense' Overall though I think they are well tied and I would be happy to use them

Crackin looking flees cb, nae danger they'll catch fish and well tied too I'd agree with eaksy that they could be a bit sparser and leave more room for the heads - I can't really talk though coz I do the exact same on my flies. Think it might be the thick stalk on the hackles I use causing the head to be a tad bulky - especially when doing 2 hackles e.g Cascade. Good job mate

Good job mate with Cascades try tying in both hackles at the same time as it reduces the bulk (also gives the fly a different appearance with both colours blended - not everybody likes this as they prefer to see the orange distinctly over the top, after fishing a while though the 2 hackles blend anyway)

Thanks for the feedback gents. I like the tip of tying in both hackle stalks at the same time for the cascades. I like sparse flies but never seem to end up tying them sparse, I will have another bash and more self control I have also been given good advice on this forum about leaving enough room at the head but every time I start back at the vice (usuallly after a month or 2 away) I end up falling into the old habits until I have banged out a few dozen flies and got my mojo back. Someone once said to keep your hand in its a good idea to tie one or two flies per day if possible.....obviously wasn't a married man!! thanks again CB

If you come from the Clyde then they will be sparse, keep them bushy for me. Nice flies. btw green is a good colour for coloured water. I seen a Norwegian fishing our local water and catching when nobody else was. They were kelts mind you. The tying was very basic ( even I could tie them) Florescent green body and black a orange wing, no ribbing or anything else. Caught a springer on it in dirty water.

I was just wondering, why the criticism re leaving more room for the heads?
To my (perhaps ignorant eye!) the heads look fairly small, and don't seem to encroach upon the eye of the hook?
Again, not being argumentative, just lookin' to learn!
Nice looking flies Clydebuilt,

Nice looking flies Clydebuilt, Cheers F others may have different views but imo there are 2 reasons for aiming for a small head - one is purely cosmetic as a smaller head can look neater. The other reason is more practical and relates to the way you tie on the fly - for certain types of knot eg the Turl you need to leave a bit of room so that it can be easily tied and has the proper action. as I said before though I think the flies look good and these are only very minor points

Clydebuilt - nice looking flies. Only thing I would suggest is when you cut material for the wing, split it in half and you find you uually still have more than enough. Also I find I stop the body much further back than I think I'll need - again you'll find you use the space.
JKboy - when tying double hackled flies you might want to try selecting bigger hackles and tying them in point first then you wont have trouble with the hackle stalks.
Hope this helps
Jones
