I once tied a fly a long time ago. I had just the one last Saturday and tied it onto a 9ft 10lb leader and cast out. As it swung round in the river I felt something take it, tightened and felt a few head shakes and then nothing. Most of the leader had been snapped off. Now the question is: What was the fly I was using? I can't find where I got the dressing from.
Body: Copper coloured tinsel Rib: Copper wire Tag:Copper wire Tail: GP topping (I think) Wing: Squirrel tail (à la Hairy Mary) Throat: Red hackle Head: Red
All I want is a name.
Already tied a few more for next Saturday
Cheers

Hi TB - not an expert fly tyer by any means but it sounds like a variant of a fly I know as the 'Pot Scrubber' - mainly due to the amount of copper you mention and the squirrel tail wing....but maybe not regards STip

Hi STip...thanks for that. Don't think it was that name but it's good enough for me. Cheers

While trying to find out where it was that someone caught 50 grilse in a day, I came across the "Copper Orange" fly in Crawford Little's book called "Success with Salmon", it has an orange hackle and orange/brown wing from the base of a bucktail. I thought about the pot scrubber as well but can't find any specific fly which matches your exact description.

Thanks rp... definitely not bucktail.....unless it tied on a bigger hook. This was something like #10 double. Thanks all.
