Hi folks T/Dog style materials available today: Temple Dog, Arctic Fox, Arctic Runner, Goat and probably more. Why use one rather than another? can they be mixed? Is there a "best" ? Any to avoid? Answers on a postcard!

Answers on a postcard! Answer on a postage stamp - Arctic fox Reasons: 1. easily available 2. cheap 3. many colours 4. long enough hair & guard hair for all but the most ambitious flies 5. easy to tie in 6. tough fibres 7. nice fluffing out if you leave in some of the underfur Mike

A am happy to use Arctic fox tail on the underwings of the smaller flies- certainly ones tied on hooks, but the straight hair of proper templedog gives a better taper to the final wing. I think fox body hair lacks the body that I like for wings.
I know it is entirely a matter of personal taste, but proper templedog such as is available from Turriff or from Lakeland is longer and much straighter than fox tail. Now that I have been tying with the real stuff, I could not go back to Arctic fox on the bigger TDs.
Arctic runner is also a very good material if you can find good stuff, but I would use it more to replace buck tail than to replace TD hair.
The goat that I have seen, even the Russian silver goat beloved by Yuri Schumakov, is too dense and thick for me to use in a TD.
