I've tried this to experiment. I first saw it on some flies showed to me by another angler on the Tay and have since seen a few Tay regulars tying some of their patterns this way. I like the idea for bigger flies, but on smaller flies, it could create a mask over the body of the fly.

Hi Smokie, Mmaybe a lot more of us do it than we realise. A lot of flies tied on doubles fish upside down, or at least on their side. Tom

SS, I have deliberately been tying flies with JC cheeks to underside for some time - have posted a few on the relevant photo and fly tying sections and will later add them here for visual effect.
I believe it is always better to keep a fly above a fish (even more-so than to it's side, and definitely, there's no point in your fly being below a fish, as it simply won't see it), and as such have found one or two patterns with the JC below work very well.
One in particular is the "copper king", tied originally by a friend, and a serious taker of summer and back end fish. I'll post up a pic to let you see later.

I hooked a fish estin the 30 to 35lb class on a ck in 2005. it was tied on a low water kamisan treble. the fish ran me into a snag and when i got my fly back it resembled a fork, totaly straightened the hook, jusy glad i had a couple of witnesses. The river was the Forth at stirling

The copper king : The JC underbody - I'll pop a few more up, waddingtons, etc to show the visual effect of underbody JC cheeks. Altmor.

Try this Salmonnut :
Hook : Size 10 or 8 Esmond Drury Outpoints Tail : Golden pheasant crest tied on top of shank without removing much of base "white" fibers. Body : copper pearl tinsel. Rib : med copper wire. Top wing : Orange buck tail or goat hair (thick at head, tapering to just short of tail length). Overlaid wit 2 strands crystal hair. Hackle : Black/dark brown badger hackle, 2-3 turns, with cream/white tippets on hackle ends. Under cheeks : Jungle cock eyes, splayed out to show under body. Head : Black thread, whip finished with black varnish.
Hope this is ok to follow - Altmor.

Look forward to them SN.
I'm away for a walk up the Endrick with the rod - don't think there'll be anything doing, with river poss too low, but worth a check out, following Thursday's rise to 1.2m.
Only got a couple of hours till the next "taxi run" for junior.
Will be using a size 16 copper king - tiny JC under the body - let you know how it fairs.

Well nothing doing on the Endrick - I've seen more water in one of Sheik Yermani's swimming pools than the pools on the Endrick today. Good walk though. Think I'll tie up a few copper kings myself Smokie - for whenever the rains hit us. Cheers, Altmor.

SS, don't know about the water controlled by the llaa, if a day ticket can be had or not. Fruin might know - amoungst others if this is an option.
I did get a day ticket from the farm on the right hand side of the road, heading down the hill into Croftammie - it's got a sign at the side of the road "farm shop", and fished their stretch of the Endrick. No fish when I was there but looked a good section of water. It lies just up from the Drymen bridge, as it bends round opposite to Buchanan Golf Course entrance.
The bit I fish is way up level with Balfron, hence the need for rain - it rises and falls v. fast. It is a private section of water, owned by the Duntreath Estate. Normally it would account for between 6 - 12 fish per season - mainly in September and October - this year, I haven't managed to get a rod on it !!
Fruin should also know the up to min info for the Leven. I've heard it's doing ok and there's a good head of fish in the Loch, waiting for the rain for a massive surge up the Endrick.
When that happens - I'll not be around for a wee while ;D ;D

The LLAIA (Loch Lomond Angling Improvemet Association) do not sell day tickets. You have to subscribe to an annual membership to fish the LLAIA stretches. However, this would also allow you to fish the River Leven, River Fruin, and the Loch itself.
Bislands have a yard in Croftamie; I think they still sell day tickets for a fair stretch of water adjacent to Croftamie.
I hear that Dalnair farm, above the Pots of Gartness, also sells day tickets.
Both these stretches are very cheap, and should allow any legal method. Both are known to produce fish in a spate.

That looks the business SN - a nice sinewy tail and wing will give good movement. Looks not too bad without the JC too. Have no doubts it will tempt one up from its lie.
