I have a few home made staffs which are great but mostly use a Snowbee extending wading staff, for smaller water or when im covering a lot of ground , and a one piece Sharpes Spey staff for bigger water or relatively short distances between pools etc.
The snowbee is telescopic with a screw lock fitting, however, you have to be cautious when locking it to correct length. If its not fully tightened then it could rapidly shorten, should you lean heavily on it etc, & you will end up in the drink.
I have never had a problem as i am very carefull & fully respect a river when wading but the potential is there.
The thread posted above is also very helpful and will give you plenty options.
