There has been many posts regarding Carron lines, can anyone offer information/experience on the rods?
Thanks

The rods are a bespoke service, made to your specifications. If you want a stiff rod that is what you get etc etc.
Brilliant as all things Carron, but not cheap.

For say a 16 footer, 4 piece, with an action similar to a Norway Speycaster, personalised etc?? I consider the top Hardy, Loomis and Sages way too expensive, and they are off the shelf! A bespoke rod would be special, commanding a special price. How does the Meiser compare??

The Carron rod is in the same ball park as the top of the range Hardys and Loomis. The Meisers are around half that price. If you are up and wish to try a Meiser let me know.

Thanks Malcolm, that would be great, sadly we are not due up to paradise again, until late April 2007. Unless of course you need a hand with the SFB's out of season experiment

What are the aims of the SFB's out of season experiment?

What are the aims of the SFB's out of season experiment? Apart from keeping Graham Ritchie and my self out of trouble, 1. is to determine whether there is a late run of salmon on the Spey, and whether a viable fishery would result. 2. to determine what % of fish caught are fresh or stale. 3. to determine is possible where these fish spawn. This is the last year of a three year study.

"Authorities" going back to Grimble and more recently Mills and Graesser where of the opinion that the three "classic" salmon rivers of Dee, Tweed and Tay had salmon entering the system every day of the year. It would be interesting if Malcolm and Graham can add the Spey to the list.

Malcolm, when and where do Spey fish spawn? Rob to paraphase the recently retired Alan Irvine of Tulchan, absolutely, from down there to up there. The salmon spawn in most areas of the river and tributaries, but most of the late running fish stay in the lower river. We usually start catching kelts mid November.

But you catch alot of kelts in Feb and March no doubt.
I'm trying to see how the season could change with your fresh December fish (assuming he had lots of mates). Extending the season is probably out if spawning occurs in Nov time. An early start ie Jan is likely to coincide with kelts, but I guess you catch more kelts than springers in Feb anyway. Interesting.
Edit: can a fish counter help?

The question is whether the extension would be viable, just what percentage are fresh and how far up the river. I would suggest that at the present time an extension would not be good for the river, BUT I have no imput other than repoting my catches. The board and the proprietors will make the final deciions on the evidence I help provide.
A`fish counter is difficult (and very expensive) to operate on a big wide river like the Spey
