Don't forget to factor in the speed of the tide when it flows upstream if you get my drift. I've seen salmon virtually surfing in on an incoming tide, particularly on rivers with a bore/aegir.

I've tried walking parallel to a salmon which was passing through the beat, but it was swimming faster than I could walk. I kept pace for about fifty yards but it was certainly swimming faster than I could comfortably walk.

I saw a shoal of eight or ten salmon come off the tide this morning and they were definitely doing more than 3mph. They came over the shallows from the tidal section like a load of kids bursting out of school and were into the next pool 50 yards upstream inside thirty seconds. I don't know how long they could keep this up but they certainly did the next three hundred yards at this pace. I rather lost track of them at this point as I was too busy playing one of them Andy
