I appreciate that every one is different and what method one choses to use may not suit another. Following a discussion with an elderly gent on the Tweed who informed me that no matter how much pratice or how good you get at Spey casting, people who spin will always have the advantage re distance and water covered. I have had many a sleepless night. Having watched several casters at the game fairs I am not convinced and was wondering what other peoples's views were. It maybe that having watched me Speycasting he was trying to give me a hint, but the more I go out the more I am convinced that providing the technique is there it should not be that huge a difference.

I think in terms of sheer distance, the spinner will almost always win out. However, distance is only a tiny aspect of fishing. Surely it is how the lure (spinning or fly) is fished when covering the water. Presentation always beats distance - it's not what you've got but where you stick it I rather cut 10 yards from my cast to get better presentation. I'd also suggest that people who spin to reach a far off lie don't appreciate the skill and art form that is spinning.

Peeps can also overcast thinking distance is everything but fish can be lying almost under your feet so to speak
