I hear that Gordon Armstrong cast 69yds in Qualifying today. He was usung his Carron 18ft rod with a competition Carron Line.
This is the longest measured cast beating Scott Mackenzies 68yd world record.
The Weegie (Speyvalley) is in the top six as well.

Malcolm, Do you know the top 6? Yes, some better than others I'm wondering if Springer meant: can you tell us who were the top six? Maybe not, but I'd be interested to know. When you said it was Carron's "competition" line, what does that mean? Is the taper thicker but shorter? What is it that is different from an ordinary line?

1st Gordon Armstrong 2 Gerald Downey 3 Murray Richardson 4, 5, 6 Rory Castella, Andrew Toft, James Chambers`in no particular order.
Is the taper thicker but shorter? Not sure which line Gordon is using but it will have a head length of around 105 ft hardly the thing for a 15ft rod, definately not thicker and shorter

Why don't competitions stipulate that lines should be "off the shelf" - perhaps they do? Is it a fly on the other end or a bit of fluff or? Still 69 yards is one heck of a cast

Some rules specify production lines, others allow free range and devlopement lines. Piece of wool rather than a fly.

Fantastic qualifying by Gerard Downey using a Norway 18' and probably an EWM (IG derived line) and very little practise. I understand Gerard has recently aquired a 17' 11" Carron rod. Sloggi, There is no real difference between the Carron 105 and the 85, 95 etc other than its length and weight distribution. These are not 'trick' easy to cast far distance lines, just regular Carron quality lines you could happily use to fish with if you had the need to cast that far and the ability and rod. Rather you than me Springer, the 85 is a great fishing line, the 95 hard work, the 105 not for me.
