Wow. I went with the intention of trying a few newer rods than my own 15' Norwich with a view to buying something a bit lighter and more responsive . I take my hats off to all the lads from the tackle companies who patiently let me try their rods, what a great bunch of people, friendly helpful and what a passion for the sport. It was inspiring to meet folks who are as mad as myself ! As usual the casting demos were amazing, but for me the highlight was actually being able to have a cast and a chat with the big names in the sport . I did something I have been putting off through nerves for years and had a 20 min lesson with Illtydd which was brilliant. Thanks also to Gerald and Scott for letting me try their prototype lines and rods. A truly great day, and I can't wait to get back to the tyne to practice what I was shown. My message to anyone standing in the shadows like myself is just walk up to the lake and have a go... you won't regret it.

His EV4 series are under 9oz for the 3 and 4 piece 15fters which is pretty light ! Be interested in your thoughts cheers Splash

Hi Splash Pardon my newness to the forum only joined tonight ! My Norwich is a pretty old m500 so I guess most of the rods would be at least an ounce or so lighter. What I did notice was the difference in balance, I 'm short in the arms and have a bad back since breaking it in a car accident so it tends to be the actual supporting of the rod above water height when deep wading & not the casting that gets me... ! I also have an even older m400 13'6 norwich which I love, and I'm aiming for similar performance but in a longer rod for spring /backend ...am I searching for the holy grail perhaps?

Hi Tyneflyfisha First of all, welcome to the forum, and thanks very much for the reply. I guess technology moves very quickly these days and was interested if you found something at the fair that "floated your boat"? As you mention, the fact that you can try out so many rods before buying is brilliant, and helps you to make an informed choice which, parochially, you feel comfortable with. The idea that a lot of tackle shops espouse, ie you spend up to a grand on a rod that you don't get to "road test " extensively is ridiculous. Well done to Eoin F in this respect in setting up the Loop Centre of Excellence. PS - Check out the Guideline Le Cie's - Superb The MF's suit me down to a T although others may prefer the fast actions

Hi & thanks for the reply What was really good was the opportunity to throw a line back at the wind (everyone's favourite scenario!) and see which rod suited my own inept style ! I have to say that I liked most of the rods that I tried, but for sheer determinedness the Daiwa SM signature rod did the business with minimal effort which I liked. Didn't get to try the LPXE on the day , (tried the Le cie F ) but springer who owns one fishes the day after me on our syndicate so might get to try a cast with a bit of luck nudge nudge .... What was interesting was there were no bad rods and having been very pleasantly surprised by the Sharpes Gordon 15' & the Z axis earlier this year I was keen to see how they all felt .
