hi lads, a question for you all, about nylon. i presume, that you all would use leader strength, of 12 to 15lb. bs. which brand, do you find, is best. invisible, fine diamater, iv'e always relied on maxima, but can't help feeling, that there may be a nylon out there, even better.i have heard of stren, low viz green, but have never seen it.. does anyone use it?? another little poser, for you..does anyone actually believe, that fish, can distinguish between colours, or do we believe, that they can only see, light and dark.....thats interesting...........gavan.........

Tries lots of different nylons including fluorocarbons, but I was not very impressed with them. On a number of occasions I had small grilse smash 11lb spotfish fluorocarbon. Needless to say it went in the bin. I also found that the knots slipped a number of times using fluorocarbon.
I am now back on maxima and would not change. Very reliable!

i agree, my old man and my pal used fluorocarbon last year and my pal was broken during the take. I tried it but soon back onto maxima.
I generally use 12lb and 15lb-If im using a 13' rod ill go down to 10lb.

I think that the problem with flourocarbon is, unless you find a reliable make a lot of it is of poor quality. I've bought some of the cheaper stuff and have not been impressed. However, I know a tay ghillie who swears by some makes that come in at reasonable prices, but they are only available from the states. I think that they are Bass Pro and Cabela's own make. Maybe he'll enlighten us as he is a forum member.
I've been using Hardy co-polymer for the last couple of seasons and have no complaints. I also like Maxima, but have found that you have to be very careful to check the line off your spool before using it. A few times I've found a spool lying at the bottom of a bag and thought "that'll do" only to find that it has lost all of it's strength. I don't know how this happens, but I imagine that it has probably been sitting damp for a while and been weakened after absorbing water over a period of time.

With fluorocarbon the knots need to be perfect every time.
Not many salmon lads buy it as they have the same problem as posted here - but if they do they buy it in 18lb + breaking strain.
Maxima is by far the most popular nylon. I use some Ultima premium sinking nylon in 15 lb for all my tube fly work.

Lost my biggest ever sea trout using 12lb Riverge flurocarbon - I'm back using maxima for all my sea trout and salmon fishing. I can honestly say it has never let me down.

I've used Maxima with confidence for many years.
Two years ago however I was put onto Bayer Perlon by a new friend. It's about the same thickness as Maxima but a light olive/clear colour which I think can help in low clear water especially in bright cinditions. It has fantastic knot strength which at the end of the day is the weakest link- unlike fluoro which I rarely use now except in 0.40mm & above. Bayer Perlon is hard to break even down at 10lb b/s. And it's cheap !

macd, what has length of rod, got to do with it? ?/ ..........gavan.... gavan, when im using the wee rod i will most likely be using very small flies-these would not swim well on 15lb. ill generally use 10lb and 12lb depending on circumstances and only go to 10lb in low water. Conversely I dont think I would ever risk using 10lb on the big rod. Again fly size would come into it- eg a big waddie wouldnt turnover very well on 10lb. the choice of nylon is part of the overall set up. good question gavan macd

Macd I once made that mistake on the conon. I was fishing with 10 lb maxima, the pools were stuffed with fish, but they wouldn't look at a thing. The water was low and the sun bright, so I decided to go to 8lb to see if that would make a difference. I hooked a fish first run down and it turned out to be a large salmon 15lb+ and smashed me when it jumped. A lesson learned the hard way!!

I've used Maxima for years and its never let me down. I use Stren (yellow or blue) in 17lb or 14lb as a reel line mainly because the visibility allows me to see where the bait is more accurately but it's too stiff for leader material.

thank you lads, for all of your'e helpfull comments, it looks as if i will be staying with maxima......
a bit surprised, there was no comment, regarding, the sight capabilities of salmon. what it really comes down to,is, if they can only distinguish, light and dark, and not a range of colours, does fly colour matter?.... i can't remember ever seeing an article, about the fish's sight , or lack of it......... ................gavan.........

I only use Cabelas or Basspro own brand flouro, have done for aroud ten years or more. I t simply depends who I am ordering from, Neither has EVER let me down. I use #8,#10 #12 and sometimes #14. i get it in 200yd spools. It is very strong,I use the #14 only for fly leaders because if I tied it onto spinning gear as a leader from the swivel using say 18lb main line and the lure gets caught I'd lose the lot because the 14 fluoro is stronger the 18 main line, any mono brand included. Over at Coupar grange they were bemoaning the fact that their fluoro were snapping on fish , I gave Johnie a spool of,I think 8lb of mine,no more lost fish because of breakage. However I have to say a guy from Stren I was in touch with said that the bulk spools of fluoro ie 100yds+ were of a different "recipe" of fluoro than the fluoro tippet spools ie 25 or 50yd spools. I trust the american fluoro 100% ps I won't get any more till I send off my next order, via my nephew in the states. If I am ordering stuff to be sent direct I NEVER order from Basspro because the use UPS ,who infact collect the tax,vat and charge you for doing it. Cabelas don't use them,so your parcel has a realistic chance of getting past HM Customs !!!!!!

I normally use Maxima like most others (down to 12lb) but during summer and periods of low water levels I use Seaguar fluoro which seems fine and hasn't 'broken' on me to date.

Ive used berkley trilene XL for a number of years now. I use to use it on the spinning reel and found it was a very tough line. It is also white/ transparent in colour which I think helps for presentation. I then started using it as fly leader which has never let me down.

maxima chamelon for dark waters and ultra green for clearer waters. I've tried flurocarbon and co-polymer but have always returned to maxima. Superior knot strength for droppers etc.

I still use maxima from time to time but I am finding that I am using Seaguar more and more. The seaguar is not cheep at £9.99 for 50M but it has a high abrasion resistance a reasonable amount of stretch and excellent knot strength if you have tied a nice neat knot. The only problem about using either is when you get stuck on a rock a real bugger to break the line and sometimes you wonder if you have snagged the main line due to the amount of pressure you have to apply to snap the leader.

Nothing wrong with Maxima.
I now use Rio Grand Max - cheapre than some if you buy 100 yds - on the advice of a pro.
