my friend who is a member here said i should get rid of my floating line with a poly leader attatched and go for a full sinker ie:wetcel 2 or similar in order to catch more fresh fish in the new season, does this method give a greater advantage or does the poly leader come close enough to make no "real" difference?

I've got to say fishing the full sunk line off the left bank is probably my favourite form of fishing.
As Graham says, have all the lines available. Most rivers don't really need sinking lines in my experience. Just the big one's, Tay and Beauly for example.
Never use anything on the Tyne except a floater and 5ft poly tip.

Its good you raised this point as i was going to ask the same one! Grant tells me that a wetcel2 is perfect for the Ericht in the Spring....... so i've got one on my shopping list! I did wonder though how effective a 5ft or 10ft fast sinking poly tip would be on a floater as an alternative?
Like Graham says... i suppose it depends on the pool! I'll give it a go with both and see what happens! Cheers guys! John.

Eh up Crawfish and Johnmac,a wet 2 in my opinion is a must have line, because when you need one you need one, they will hold their depth better than any poly-tip especially in a fast stream(which tends to lift as it comes into the last 1/3rd of your "swing").Thing is I see a need for wet 2,intermediate and poly-tips.Cold high water calls for a line to put your fly down to the fish, lessor flows and a higher water temp. maybe the intermediate, late spring/early summer go for poly-tips.Consider this too,poly-tips don't just go on the end of a floater, try a fast sink poly-tip on an intermediate to get a wet 2 performance then remove the poly-tip or replace it with one of a lessor sink rate in slacker flow or shallower water.Tip here I have a floater, intermediate and wet 2 I use with poly-tips and they all have 2ft cut off the front taper, the only rule is not to fish a lighter poly-tip than the line being fished, floater gets any poly-tip from a clear floater to a LSR 24,intermediate goes from clear intermediate up and the wet 2 starts with the equivalent poly-tip and goes up.Try an intermediate and poly-tips on the Ericht Johnmac more flexibility than a wet 2.Think about it 3 multi-tip lines for the price of a Rio or thereabouts. Can anyone recommend a full sinker for my 15' 1" Sage rod?

me again folks! I've been looking through Trout and Salmon for a decent fly line for the Spring.... and i've been informed on this site that the Wet Cel 2 is no longer made...... so whats the alternatives??? i like the sound of the Hardy Mach 2.... i've got the floater which i like.... but i cant seem to see many alternatives...... its for the Ericht.... so the Ian Gordon Spey line (which i have in a floater and struggle with on a heavy fly) doesn't seem like an option........ i'm told again, from this site ( your a helpful bunch!!!) that its probably because i'm not getting a long enough length out because its such a narrow river!
So what are the options guys?? Im on a 13ft Oracle IV by the way! 10/11!
cheers folks! John.

Good thread guys, here's my line on it. (Pardon the pun) ;D
A full sinker has it's place - for me, in high spring or back end water. I firmly believe though a fish will rise to the fly, given water clarity and good presentation.
When using a floating line with added sink tip (I prefer the former "waxed" sink braids than the modern polyleaders), I feel more confident, and let's face it, a salmon will through its field of vision, see the fly either above or to the side of where it is stationed in the river, it's not likely to see the fly below it.
Given the choice, I'd sooner use the floater and sink tip or intermediate with sink tip than a full blown sinker in most situations. As they say, "each to their own".

John,
The head length on the Daiwa is 67ft, if my memory serves me correctly. This makes it two feet longer than the IG, so it probably will not suit you.

I used to like the Hardy Distance Spey as a sinker, when a shorter head is required, but you may struggle to get one now. They are sometimes for sale on Ebay.

Yes, 77ft. Thanks for the correction Graham, I've obviously driven myself daft tying Cascade variants all night, for the coming season

Daiwa Lochmor medium sink?? anyone heard of it??? any good? I have both the sinker and the fast sinker. I have to disagree with Graham and Fruin on head length. It is 68' and the line is 40yds. Well that what it says on the box! They cast well, but tend to land with a splash. I have not fished them in anger yet (used my DT wetcell2 until now) but have trial cast them on the river with both my 15' 10/11 Norway and a 14' Oracle. The Norway can handle anything. I can also cast the lines with the Oracle, but it does not have the same power as the Norway, and while it will do the job it is not the perfect tool to be handling full sinkers. I bought them for the rare occasions I will need them, usually all I need at most is my IG int. sometimes with a short fast sink tip. At £19.99 I think they are an excellent buy. Jock

I'd recommend the Hardy Mach for a 13ft rod. You can choose between the fast intermediate (clear) which is 2inch per second sinkrate or the sink 2 which is around 3in per second. Personally I like the clear fast Interm line. The head lenght is 55ft....perfect for a 13fter. It will cast heavy flies and you can even add heavier tips for deeper presentation.

Jock
I've bought a lochmor fast sink line but looking at the colour codes on the box, I'm not sure if I've been sent the right line.
Box and label on spool say FS, but the head is more of a darkish brown colour - box says FS head is black and MS is dark purple, I think.
What colour is your FS line?

The Partridge IG 10/11 65ft head sinkers will work very well with that rod. Would you go with the slow sinker or fast sinker - looking for a sink 2 version?

You probably have been sent the correct line. Whoever decided / described the colours of these two lines was colour blind. When you have the two lines side by side one looks a lighter brown. This believe it or not is the fast sink @ 11cm/s and the other a darker brown/black, this is the sinker @ 6cm/s. I have had to write the sink rates on the spools because the lines look the wrong colour. Cheers, Jock

Cheers Graham - I think the medium will be ok. I'm going to be doing the AAPGAI provisional course and need a sinker for the test and practice as well as for fishing with!

Just one more point Graham,I use an IG floater rated 10/11 on a Norway15' 9/10.Should I go up to the same rating if I purchase the medium sinker? Hope this makes sense....9/10 or 10/11...you know what I mean..
Cheers
