I am thinking about buying the IG 12 foot #7/8 doublehander for some fishing on some of the narrower Northumberland salmon streams - tried the rod and it was a wand compared to my 14 foot B&W Powerlight..
I have a daft question though..
If you buy a shorter rod the d loop is shorter and hence you would need a shorter head spey line? I like the 65 foot IG line for the B&W but if the IG #7/8 line is matched to a 12 foot rod, wont it have to have a shorter head than 65 foot to match the rod..?
Whats the length of the head on the IG #7/8 line and is it matched perfectly to his shortest rod (ie the 12 footer?)
Anyone used this combination - did it still sling out 25 yards?
many thanks - JJ

this might sound a bit daft to most of you, but on my 13" rod i use an airflo 40+ trout line 9weight and it casts a dream (well for me anyway ) think the head is only 35 foot long so short range casting is no problen and if you want a bit extra distance it does punt out like a shooting head. scotty.

Hi JJ
I have the IG 12' rod, and it works very well with the Snowbee 8/9 1D line, and will also turn over 10' polyleaders. This combination will catch you a fish from the Avon!

Hmmmm ... Bogyoch is there any reason why you didnt match the IG rod with an IG line or do you just like Snowbee?
Good advice from all, but mistakes on loading a salmon rod correctly are pretty expensive (~£50) - it all seems quite hit and miss..
But hey if it'll catch me a fish on the Avon Bogyoch it will be worth every penny and more besides!!

I had a Snowbee line anyway and it just seemed to be a great combination to start with. For me, the IG line with its 65' head would have been a bit much for the 12' rod, particularly in tight spots along the Deveron and Avon.

Scotty I too have used Airflo 40+ size 9 "trout lines" on a 12'6" Hardy rod. Great lines, until the backing part wears out but they can be had cheap, so who cares. I now use two size 9 40+ "Expert" lines often in summer. The normal 40+ line in it's fast-sink disguise is almost like a Teeny for those small-medium sized rivers in highish water. What's an IG line?
