Short clear tube , under wing of Norwegian virgin's pubic hair, (Polar bear or white bucktail is a poor substitute) Wing Long black hair, goat monkey human horse whatever original had peacock herl I now use glittery stuff.
Fished by whacking out and stripping it back.

Ive just ordered some black Icelandic sheep hair. Thought it might make a good wing for the sunray Has anyone used this material before? I use the arctic runner hair alot for my shrimp flies as it seems more softer and mobile than buck tail. Is this sheep hair similar? Macsalmo

for a proper sunray shadow, colobus monkey is where its at, as sported by the repulsive pete burns on celeb big brother (no, i wasn't watching that tripe, its just that it comes up in a lot of google searches for colobus monkey). the scandinavians will rarely use anything but the genuine article in their sunrays.
good luck in trying to find it though.....

Colobus Monkey - I believe David Attenborough was given some as a momento from his monkey hunting trip with the gorrilla troop. Matches his own hair now.

Slight deviation to Collie Dogs here - what is the material for the wing?
I've tied a few up on size 6 singles so far using silver tinsel for the body and just standard bucktail for the wing, varying between 3 and 5 inches. Will this be ok?

If you cant trim a collie, try goat or black bear or Icelandic Sheep if pushed. All readily available. Buck is a bit stiff for the collie dog.

Thanks Ross, i'll get some this week then.
Think it might pay to have a few in the box for my trip to the Dee next week, i see there has been a rise in the levels on the Dee today and more rain due on saturday with some milder temp's.
My fingers are firmly crossed for a good week

Looks really different from the one in T&S this month - which is best version? The one with white shown here or the T&S one.
Is it fished just like a Collie Dog?

I have recently received some coaching on fishing this pattern. Can be good, but hard work to fish without the proper kit.
As the great tutor says "just wang it out and pull it back"
Fished just the same as the Collie.

Which pattern do you use? The one in T&S, the one posted here, or another version?

To be honest i really would not stress too much about the finer details of what they look like. So long as they are made of the right materials they will work in certain conditions/situations. The one's i have recently tied look like the one posted above. Although i have has a lot of 'interest' in the Collie Dog version - Alluminium tube, goat hair (nothing else).
Collie Dog / Sunray all the same thing really.

Thanks.
I'll add a few Sunrays to my box. I do like the Collie Dog - had a few sea-trout on it this season.

Don't go telling everyone, how am I to charge for this information if you put the advice on here for free.
