Has anyone tried to tie some of these? I've found them easy enough to tie, but I'm not sure how to hold the hook behind the XS tubing when making micro-tubes.
I saw him tie one of these in Aberdeen recently but I forget how he held the hook or what size of hook he'd use. He didn't use any tube lining, but that's all I remember - help!
They look good - well they do in my bath!

Partridge salar hooks it is i think he recommends mate. I'm trying to get my hands on some of these discs too, what a great idea. Let us know how you hold the hook if you find out, i've always suffered this problem on smaller tubes too

The discs/cones are available from Glasgow Angling Centre in all sizes.
I'll get back to you on the hook-hold unless someone else responds in the meantime.

Hi
isn't the hook just hanging free, with a bit of silicone tubing over the knot and eye of the hook? The silicone tube will lessen the strain from the back end of the XS-tube on the knot when casting and so that the knot will be in a fixed position.

That sounds right - cheers. My micro tubes are about 1-1 1/2cm long. How long should the silicone sleeve be and what kind of silicone tubing would you use?

I use silicon tubes witch have a quite small inner diameter and thick "wall" lets say hole: 0.7 mm diameter and all over tube diameter 3 mm, so you have to "force" it on and over the eye/knot, thus not sliding down due to casting. Don't know any specific brand, but they usually come with the bottleneck tubes I bye, also found suitable silicone tubes at work which are used for small peristaltic pumps. when it comes to how long sleeves, I try to just cover the eye and knot and get some buffer to the fly. Just make sure that the "cut" is straight, if it becomes slanted the hook will be at an angle from the tube when fished, I don't know if the fish care, but I do I'll try to post a picture of how it looks.

Thanks - I'd welcome a picture. How small are the hooks you use for micro tubes?

Hi Here we go, first try with pics. first of a size 12 Owner hook with silicone tubing. same size hook with tube. This one is with wider tube and classic "mounting" of hook. I tend to go for this one more and more, I usually also put a small amount of epoxy/aquashure were the shanks part to prevent the wing to get stuck. I some times find that the silicone tubing will slide back to wards the hook on the double tube hooks since the eye is so narrow (Hook in pic. smallest size i think, 12 or something) which is not the case with the treble up top. Small bottle tube with free hanging hook. and lastly a a cone head, not really with any tube at all, it's just enough tube to tie in the wing and to get the cone in place. I guess this is the smallest i go since I haven't found any smaller trebles. You might find the flies overdressed, but when the fox hair hits the water it'll "shrink" (out of English words...) Hope this can be of use. And thank god for the spell check Jan

Actually, not really ;D Haven't fished them that much just tied a bunch. Either it has been to much water and cold and so I haven't had much faith in them or as this summer in Norway, really really low water so wee doubles has felt as a better choice, but this year... I'd better go tie a new bunch Jan
