I have been to see my surgeon today as i have a deacying wisdom tooth that has been causing me grief. Since taking a course of antibiotics for three days (v strong one's) and strong prescribed painkillers i have been pain free for over 1 week and i am currently taking no painkillers.
Whilst examining the xray we observed that the nerve which provides sensation to my tongue and lower lip is extremely close to the tooth root which needs to be taken out. The risk he says of the nerve been damaged is about 1-2%. However, if the root is damaged then i will loose ALL sensation in my tongue and lower lip.
I know the risk is small, but that sounds like a nightmare if it happened. Has anyone been in this situation before - any advice?

It's bad enough when the numbness only lasts for 4-6 hours after an injection. Make sure you get a fully qualified tooth puller to do it.

andrew, sounds like you have more chance of catching a fish on fed water than knacking your talk organ up,the thing is if it goes wrong how are you going to hold a regal kingsize in your mouth?
andrew,i had an operation on my cruciate ligament 10 years ago.on the operating table i said to the surgeon,"whats the worst that can happen?"he said,"theres a small chance you could have an allergic reaction to the anesthetic,it could be fatal, thats at worst though." i was thinking more in terms of unsightly scar on knee etc. they just cover their arses.

I think they are just covering themselves too. The top one comes out in a couple of weeks which is actually worse in terms of decay. Getting that one out under a local anesthetic and a sedative which i'm looking forward to in a strange way. Well the sedative anyway!
Think i'll leave the other one for now, and see how it goes.
Alan - you will be kissing my arse when i invite you again in good conditions and you actually CATCH some fish.
