Seeing as it is the time of year for random awards, here is an alternative; best cover version. Often that award is given to Joe Cocker for Get By With a Little Help From My Friends. Let's face it, taking on the Fab Four and getting away with it while they were still in their prime took some nerve. There have been a lot of tremendous covers, and unfortunately more bad ones. So I guess the criteria is when the cover becomes the song of the coveror rather than the original artist. Tempting to still go for Cockup, or Gun's cover of Cameo's Word Up ;D However, I'm going for the link below. Nine Inch Nails is probably not too familiar a name among forum members. So when this icon covered one of their tracks it rasied an eyebrow or twae. However, listen carefully to the lyrics, and for those who know anything about his life you will know they could so easily have been written by him about him. Trent Renzor, lead singer of NIN had this to say about the cover: "I pop the video in, and wow… I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane....... [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning—different, but every bit as pure" The video has been voted the greatest Country Video of all time (and no it's not going to be some Line Dancing Emerdalers from hell that you think). So for those of you who have never heard Johnny Cash's interpreation of Hurt, pour yousel' a large one, put the kids and opposition in another soundproof room, remove all distractions, click on the link below, sit back and marvel, then play it again... www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO9dbmJ_2zU

CLaG, That version of that song, when you know the history and the circumstances of the moment, really gets you. I know a guy that can't listen to it without crying and I've got to admit, I'm an inch away myself when I hear it.

Spirit - Randy California guitar, his uncle Ed Cassidy (seriously) on drums and Larry 'Fuzzy' Knight on the big bad bass. Nae 'loops', 'chick' singers, banks of anonymous keyboard players or any stage gimmickry whatsoever - just 3 guys a'rockin an a'rollin. Check out their cover of the Hendrix cover of Hey Joe by Tim Rose or Billy Roberts (depending on who you believe) if you can download it from the album Spirit of '76'. Click the link below for Randy and the boys cover of Boab Zimmermans Like A Rolling Stone. www.youtube.com/results?search_query=randy%20california%20like%20a%20rolling%20stone&search=Search

My vote would be All along the Watchtower - If you have heard Bob Dylan's original and Hendrix's cover, they are both good, but boy did Hendrix give it something extra..

Little Wing ( Hendrix ) by Stevie RV. Awesome.
Strange Affair ( R. Thompson ) By Martin Simpson/June Tabor. Goosebump guitar and vocals.
Any Dylan song covered by anyone else. Can't stand his " vocals "

David Bowie did an album of them - Pinups - Sorrow was my favourite, he also covered Let's spend the night together and A day in the life
Carole King's Tapestry album has been almost completely "covered"
Hendrix? how could you forget "Wild things", or the Muppets or the Goodies
John Lennon - Stand by me
Stereophonics - Handbags and gladrags
Beatles - Twist and shout
Matthews Southern Comfort - Woodstock
Ami Stewart - Knock on wood
Manfred Mann - Blinded by the light
Rolling Stones - Beast of burden
I hope we can exclude anything that was "sampled" from this thread, please.....

We seem to have become distracted. The aim of this thread is to pick one tune and put a caser for it. If your choice is available on You Tube then post the link.

Sinaed O'connor doing 'Nothing compares to you'. Far better than the Prince original, which is still a good little tune in it's own right.

Sinaed O'connor doing 'Nothing compares to you'. Far better than the Prince original, which is still a good little tune in it's own right. Brian Eno - Seven Deadly Fins Marc Almond - Just for One Moment (Lee Hazelwood) David Bowie - Amsterdam (Jacques Brel) Lambchop - Grip (Stranglers) Johnny Cash - Mercy Seat (Nick Cave) Devo - Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) Siouxie and the Banshees - Helter Skelter (Beatles) REM - First we take Manhattan (Leonard Cohen) Controlled Bleeding - Sombre Reptiles (Brain Eno) Lloyd Cole - Chelsea Hotel (Leonad Cohen) These all ad something to the originals and are not purely derivative. Hey, the Eno version of Seven Deadly Sins even adds in a fish theme

Russ Abbot's cover of Joy Division's 'Atmosphere' is pure class. Shame on you Dunbar, That's one of those songs that once it is mentioned, gets into your head and stays there for days. CLaG and Splash will now have to put up with me humming it all day tomorrow! The Blues Brothers version of stand by your man always sticks in my mind for being completely bizarre. CD CD
