I've had my David Bailey Father-in-law round for some help so here goes:
Dressing:
Tube: 1" Alum. with liner removed
Tail: mixed yellow, orange and black squirrel tail with optional krystal hair
Body: Med. gold oval tinsel over black floss
Wing: Black squirrel tail
Under hackle: Fluo. orange cock
Over hackle: Blue guinea fowl
Cone: med. brass
I had already tied all the tails in when starting the step by step
(for my 10 flies for the swap) I will try to post the tail bit soon:
1) Tie in the tinsel and floss
2 Wrap the floss carefully back up to the head of the fly
3 Follow up with the tinsel rib
4 Tie bunch of black squirrel tail in as the wing
5 Trim off excess wing and tie in orange hackle
6 Carefully wrap hackle round and tie off (about 2-3 turns)
7 Push back orange hackle and tie in, then tie in guinea fowl hackle
8 Wrap guinea fowl hackle round and tie off (1-2 turns)
9 Push back both hackles and create neat head, then tie off (whip finish)
10 Varnish head well
11 Now get a different tube (to your fly) put some new liner tubing into it, leaving approx 3mm stuck out and carefully melt a burr
12 Finshed burr
13 This pick shows the new liner being inserted backwards up into the new fly
14 Slide cone onto liner
15 Push cone tight up to the hackles
16 Cut liner off approx 3mm from cone
17 Hold back hackles (protecting them) and CAREFULLY melt burr to finish the fly (I use our gas hob for this on a very low flame)
Voila, one finished Tummel shrimp conehead (Im not going to tell you how long all that has taken me to do)
