Here are a few pictures of me tying my version of the Monkey. Apologies for the picture quality
Start with 3/4" or 1" aluminium tube. Black thread. Add a yellow schlappen false hackle - a good chunk of hackle Then add some arctic fox that reaches the hook. I've also put some pearl crystal hair over the fox.
Add the first black wing. On this one I've used "629" goat hair (6"-9" long).
Then add some sparkle of your choice - I've used 3 strands of crinkle flash. Add the second wing of hair. Again it's 629 goat. The wing is approx. 4 1/2" and tapers, although I usually tie the wing 3 1/2" - this one is for higher and faster water.
Then put in a couple of strands of peacock herl. It acts as a flash and adds solidity to the wing.
If I'm out for sea trout, then I'll use this version with a strip of grizzle hackle down each side of the wing. I tend to stick grizzle hackle on anything that may get near a sea trout
However, on this one I'm putting on JC cheeks. I always fold the ends back and tie in to prevent losing one while fishing
Just a case of trimming up the head, then I varnish three times or as required.
Hopefully, the end result
I fish with as big a c-curve as possible and speed up the retrieve as it comes onto the dangle. At the moment I'm fishing a floater with a intermediate tip (Loop Quattro).
GRitchie intimated that he lands 1 out of every 10 chasing fish while using these type of flies. A poor ratio perhaps, but really good fun watching the follow and do hold on tight when the fish takes
