A great turnout at the opening of the Spey at Aberlour today. Last years winner of the Spey quaich Davie Leith was almost crying when he had to pour not 1 but 2 bottles of Glenfarclas 10 year old into the river. STV had missed the opening ceremony and it had to be re-done. Anglers were very optimistic as the condition were excellent and it wasn't long before the jungle drums were pounding of a fresh fish at Lower Pitcroy, although it may not have been the first. I'm pretty sure considering the conditions that a few more will have been caught, unfortunately no fresh fish for us though, but plenty of kelts which were great sport. There is no-where that I would have rather been today than on the banks of the Spey.

Phones rather than Lower Pitcroy, 14 lber by local angler Ian Simpson. Wester Elchies, Rothes and Tulchan D all had fish.

Thanks for the correction, well done to Sandy Smith and Ian. Jungle drums must have been playing the wrong tune - bit like the opening day remarks on here from the Spey last year.
Congratulations on your own fish today Malcolm - wondered what all the flashing was about. ( Camera that is ! )

Top of the Boat. The Aberlour boys were hauling the kelts out, between Kineromy and Aberlour there must have been a kelt being played all morning.

Anyone know which part of the River the Kinermony stretch lies upon? Is this a closed shop , or, is there access for weekly or daily Rods?

Hi Stoater,
Kinermony is a 3 rod beat just above Aberlour - Mid Spey. Our beat and Delagyle the beat above, are on the right bank directly opposite the more famous Wester Elchies. We are booked from opening day, with daily lets, run by a local businessman in March, (all gone I believe).
We do have a week available this year from 2-7 July but I don't deal with the lets I'm afraid. As a mattter of interest the main grilse run this year didn't arrive with us in numbers until early August, although historically they can begin from anytime around the Wimbledon fortnight. The Spey suffered, as many rivers did this year from smaller grilse, so we're all hoping for the same numbers but slightly larger Grilse this year.
There is lots of availabilty for daily / weekly lets at the Aberlour Angling Association directly below Kinermony for I beleive £20 per day - truly excellent value. I would suggest May as the best month, although at that time of year you may have to jostle for position.
As a matter of interest we got our first fresh fish today 9lb. It had been in the river for a couple of weeks by the look of it and is back there again now. Great fun with the kelts over the past 3 days but I imagine things will slow up soon.
Hope the info is of use Stoater
Graham - wish I hadn't been so vocal with the 'Tips' thread now I've been named and shamed !.....................Thanks mate !...............lol

Absolutely no problem Graham, actually I found it quite amusing. Like you I'm not one of those who lurkes in the shadows and will happily give my opinion, often whether it's required or not. I am however the first to admit that I'm not always right! ( just most of the time.....lol )
What I do like about this forum is the common passion for Salmon Fishing and the willingness to share information. It's great to hear the opinions of like-minded folk along with the odd bit of light hearted banter!
Hope the Dee fishing is going well and I look forward to meeting you on the banks of the Spey.

It seems to have gone quiet on Fishspey since Monday - are fish still being caught?
For future reference, what is the range of gauge heights at Aberlour for good fly fishing?

It seems to have gone quiet on Fishspey since Monday - are fish still being caught? Aberlour have picked up a couple total about 8 from the Spey. For future reference, what is the range of gauge heights at Aberlour for good fly fishing? Which beat ? Wester Elchies fishes best at under a foot, Carron about 18"
