What I do like about this forum is the common passion for Salmon Fishing and the willingness to share information. It's great to hear the opinions of like-minded folk along with the odd bit of light hearted banter! Well said Jock, I couldn't have put it better myself.

A question for Oor Wullie. What are the benefits of Fish Spey? Malcolm, I've spent most of the day in the garden earning brownie points for my fishing trip next week. Came in all tired and emotional....I hate gardening, and went on-line to see how the catches had been last week. The T,T and D have not only got a reasonable number of beats replying but also have a reasonable amount of beats available for fishing, not so the Spey. As a mere punter what good is fish Spey to me? I can answer this....NONE. Who does it benefit? Is it helping salmon conservation on the Spey? What is it costing and what are the benefits? Away for a lie down, no doubt your answer will waken me up

Jock,
My guess is that most beats on the Spey are more or less fully booked and don't see the need / benfit of the fishspey website.
In saying that I contacted Tulcan and Ballindalloch about availability and they sent me the availability (pretty much the lean times were only available).
If you check the other sites, it would appear that most beats on these rivers have availability and appreciate the business.
Another point - Maybe the subscription to fishspey is expensive..??

The Spey riperean owners are a conservitive lot, and cannot yet see the advantages of using the internet marketing potential and as Say says, the river is pretty well booked up. If you read the Recent Catches page I try to tell readers what is happening on the river without mentioning beats which will not allow the catches to be mentioned.
Hopefully a few more beats will sign up soon.

Ahh
I see some of you are beginning to wake up.
These sites are NOT ran for your benefit. They serve two purposes.
1. They are now a "political requirement" to ensure that all River Boards show to the Scottish Executive that fishing is available to the great unwashed at reasonable prices.
2. They put money into someones pocket.
Now there is nothing wrong with any of the above , as a by product, is the excellent information you get off the Fish Scotland sites and perhaps you get to fish somewhere you once could only have dreamed of.
These site formats were developed and the idea floated/sold to the DSFB's as a way of meeting these new criteria and the perceived threat by the executive to "nationalise" salmon fishing. As such they are a commercial venture and will stand and fall by their viability. I may state that these are not cheap to buy into.
Fishery boards are too encourage proprietors to make information on fishing opportunities more publicly available .
Old attitudes die hard and all this freedom of information is seen as dangerous by some.
I suspect in the end the mighty £ will be the lure that drags a few more on board. I am sure that the beats advertising on the sites are seeing an increase in business and if this can be seen as extra income on more traditional "slow periods" More owners/ agents will want a piece of the action eventually. However there is a downside. If you have all this fishing available in year one and it is re-booked for year two in advance - what have you available??? As Paul Daniels said- "not a lot" this then cuts down any income and you have a viability problem.
These sites are in their infancy and you should take advantage of all they have to offer- just bear in mind they are not there for the good of YOUR health.

May I just make the point that the people who administer the sites are unpaid- it is the holding company fish- Scotland that makes the money.
