Best fish of the week. 16lb. Must be plenty of fresh fish around after all the water that there has been?

Hate to disappoint but there are not a lot of fish, yet, about in the Tweed system. Had hold of one for some time on the Whiteadder on Thursday. Tried the Till and Tweed at Coldstream, general opinion is that they arn't there yet in any decent numbers. Early days yet though, back soon.

Spoke to George this morning and he said that there had been quite a few fish seen, he has had 11 salmon so far this year, and 5 sea trout. They have had alot of water just like many of the other beats which has wiped out qite a few days fishing I have a day provisionally booked for the 21st April, and cannot wait. Hopefully the weather will be kind and the fish in a taking mood.

Does anyone on the forum fish Dryburgh? Would be interested in any ones thoughts and techniques on the beat before hand. I believe it is the lower beat I will be on.

Fished Dryburgh loads of times and both beats are very special-more fun in the spring as its a bit harder going than the back end and George gees everyone up for it.There is a fairly regular cast there who are all freindly and if you are on the bottom bit the new hut is good--soo good it can be hard to leave! Upper has some stunning water and is reminiscent of the Dee/Spey at the top with the grass banks and the suspension bridge and lower beat has some super long spring pools, easy peasy wading and plenty of fly water although the Long Stream is a fair walk if you don't do what I did last time with the Earl of Chorley and took a 4x4 down through the field.
Part of the Dryburgh experience is George, the head boatman, who is a star ghillie, great company and very helpful.Mug up on subjects such as fine clarets,Jensen Interceptors and vintage Jags.George is easily pleased with the best things in life........!
This time of year intermediates and dressed trebles/short tubes would see you ok at the top of the beat and further down nearer the hut GI (Grolsch Imbiber) George will probably have you on sink tips and dressed trebles-Cascades are a favourite and I have had good days there on orange and red copper bodied Allys repectively and for tubes black and yellow seems to stir them up.You need to be able to chuck a good line to get the best of it but I have had fish take close in too-especiallythe pool near the hut as there are two sets of lies, inner and outer and two runs thro sees them covered.
Standard tip is for a springer with George in the boat/roping you down is a pair of size 10 wide fitting RM Williams brown suede Craftsman Boots-try to hook all your fish when he is with someone else-its cheaper in the long run.
You will have a great day out at this time of year, fush or nae fush.Don't forget the Pauillac or St Emilion.
DTYS!

I can't wait to get stuck into those springers. George told me today that the fish are there(which is a good sign) so hopefully tomorrow afternoon I can lure one or two out of the hiding spot. Then give it some serious fishing on Saturday. Will report back.

Arrived Dryburgh lunch time on Friday. First things first, lets have a drink of wine and some lunch. Very nice bottle of red already opened on the table. Fantastic start to an afternoons fishing. I was on the lower beat which was a good thing as it is a better low water beat than the upper beat. Started around 1pm ish, not a fin to been seen in the first pool that I fished. Similar happenings in the second pool, nothing seen, and never heard any splashes, things really not looking very good. Entered the third pool, I was told to wade on ankle deep, well ankle deep, to George does mean at least knee height and above. Merrily fishing away then got this very slight pull, BINGO, I had finally connected, gave George a shout who was fishing the same pool but higher up, all I could here was let the fish run, mean while I was busy trying to get to shore, fish swimming towards me and George is still telling me to let it run, (bugger that for a game of soldiers) I wanted this fish on the bank as sonn as I could. Within a space of no more than 5 mins if that, I had managed to persuade it to swim to me and then it was on the bank. A bright shiny bar of silver, weighing in at 8lb exactly. I had a smile from ear to ear, what a brilliant afternoons fishing. Saw quite a few others but they declined the offer to come out of the water. It then called for a celebration of catching the bar of silver which all started in the fishing hut and finished off in Burts Hotel in Melrose. After that the rest is much of a blurrrrrrrrrr. Fished Lower Pavillion on Saturday, that was after a few comments on how I must have enjoyed the night before. Yes slightly on the rough side. By lunch time and having sometihing to eat was starting to feel alot better. Fished till mid afternoon, not much water, so called it a day there. Had a couple of beers in the hut and enjoyed the banter. Saturday evening had another fish follow right up to rod but it then decided it was happy where it was and swam off.
Very much in need of water, but nevertheless I caught a salmon so that did me.
Had a very quiet evening on Saturday as you can well imagine.
Photos to follow

Well done YE, nothing to beat a hard earned fish in difficult conditions.
I usually save the red wine/beer until after the fishing. ;D

Tremendous Kate.
Good to see the vino was ready and waiting and then followed up by a fuishie. There are some great places to catch a fish but I never seem to forget the ones I get at Dryburgh.
I saw Giorgio Marauder in the Ednam last Friday week in t't suede RMs and got a berating over a f*g for not joining him this Spring before he headed into the wine list and dinner with the Bird lads.
He's picking up a few fish at the moment.
Look forward to the photos-any moonwalking in the clogs from G by way of celebration??

It has taken 3 years to catch a Tweed fish, it was well worth the wait. First year I fished the Tweed, I fished West Learmouth (1 day) and Dryburgh (1 day). Year two supposed to fish Dryburgh on the Friday, no chance river far too heavy, Saturday fishing at Makerstoun with Sagefly,(No chance, far too heavy) so we had an afternoon fishing at Lower Pavillion, nothing doing(that was end of March). End of April went up to tweed again, fished only L.Pavillion, no water what so ever, got sun tan, then went to Fishing fair on the Sunday. They do say 3rd time lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have fished the Upper beat on a couple of occassions, this was the first time on the Lower beat, it is a very pretty beat more so than the upper, more variety in the pools too. Had a fantastic time and would definately go again.

Well done Kate, looks like a nice beat. Did you catch on the fly? Steve.

It was caught on a flying C, I was advised to spin as it would be my best chance of catching anything, so I did as I was advised. The water was dead, not alot of flow, no good for the fly. Several people had been through with the fly and didn't even see a fish let alone catch one. Sometimes it pays to spin rather than struggle on with the fly.
