Oh well, yet another bit of the Peebleshire Salmon Fishing Association water will be lost to the highest bidder......pity, fished this for many years, and had some nice fish off it. Always said it would be only a matter of time. Next beat down, Glenormiston, is also in the package as a separate lot. Notice that the Cardrona Water is south bank only, which basically means three pools, and not all those advertised! It's quite hard to be philosophical about such changes, it was one of the nicer 'public' beats on the upper river (albeit busy at times) - the remainder of the water the Association has is hardly worth fishing now. www.johnsale.co.uk/newlook/area0_0.html - offers over 200K - likely to go for 350K plus i'm sure.

A sad day when you can find nothing out about the Peebleshire Salmon Fishing Association, when tickets might be available, what the current position is, who owns what and was the water sold before is was put on the market. Solicitors named as contact have no idea and MacDonald Cardrona Hotal does not have the courtesy to call back.
Seems to me there is a chance of some-one agreeing to buy at the current value and the marketing is just a way of checking that value. Marketed for far too short a period to be realistic with offers and no closing date advertised.
Might have put my hand in my pocket, but I'd have to wade across anyway ! I'd rather go north now.
Anyone else fish this water ?

I called Blackwood & Smith, secretaries to the Association, yesterday but they were unable to say anything conclusive ....what they did say is that they will be in as clearer position as to permitting arrangements, if any, by end September.
Unfortunately, this sale is just the latest in a series over a long time - the water has been slowly eroded by sales over many years. Unfortunately, Peebleshire Salmon Fishing Association is not an angling association in the conventional sense - the only members are the owners and I believe those who purchase permits are not 'members' in any shape or form.

Interesting the Levvy of both beats
Glenormiston fishings 5Y average of 43 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout @ £2280
Vs
Cardrona fishings 5Y average of 17 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout @ £1866
I would have thought that the levvy would have been based on catches, therefore it would seem that the levvy for Glenormiston is excellent value when compared to Cardrona.

Very sad to hear of association water being lost, as for many this is the only way they can get onto a river without breaking the bank.
The price seems sky high though. What happened to the average £5K per fish pricing, even at the bottom guide price its £12k per fish, ludicrous even for the terribly expensive Tweed.

Yes bad news for the rank and file anglers anywhere, more so on Tweed where there is a distinct lack of affordable public fishing. As a major river system it puts anglers who live within its catchment area in an unenviable position of having to pay for a private beat or travel out with the area for their sport.
Does anyone know if the , community purchase law or order whatever they call it, by the Scottish Executive cover sporting rights alone as well as property?

Good point Tweedsider. Tweed should provide affordable angling to local folk, or somethings wrong, I think.

Some news now in. I have been advised that the Peebleshire Salmon Fishing 'Association' has now been 'wound up'. What was once double-bank fishing available at £35/day has now been reduced to single bank (due to sale of the south bank) and the permit price (north bank only) has risen to £60, now let through the MacDonald Cardrona Hotel.
Fantastic! Half the water now available at double the price!

Crazy how this can happen. I've enjoyed many a good day on this water but at 60 notes, will think again.

Well blow me down with a feather duster ... much as I've enjoyed some days on this water (in November) - at that price you're a kick in the pants off a day on Upper Arndilly on the Spey in June/July. No comparison. How can the new owner justify that ?
