Just read Ian Gordon's Spey report in this months T&S.A Mr Bowles just landed his first fish after 16 YEARS.As a rookie who only started salmon fishing this year and is still to break my duck,I really didn't know whether to laugh or cry.God! could this be what I,ve got in store? How long for other members to get off the mark?
Cheers

I have fished with a chap who went 16yrs with out a fish, lost a few and had a few near misses then went and caught 5 in a single run through the pool.Since that day the gates have remained open but not to the same extent, really nice bloke he wasn't in the least bothered about the lack of results. Self caught one whilst trout fishing, decided to have a proper go and took 4/5 years to get another. Pedro.

Landed one first time out up at Falstone on the North Tyne on the Devils Spawn, last day of the season.
Invested in the fly gear and fished almost every week the following season from feb until sept when I managed my first fly caught salmon. Finished that season with four.
Stick in there, it will happen.

Managed one on my fourth outing with fly rod but that was the grand total for that year one will come when you least expect it, all about being in the right place right time.A friend of mine went blank for his first three seasons now he averages 80-100 fish a year.

Good luck IainJay - its an amazing feeling when you get one, I almost stifled a sob!
I went 18 months before I got my first (after 12 daytickets on mostly association waters). Now I've caught one though I hardly look at my trout fishing gear.
Salmon fishing is the nuts!

Had a couple of half-hearted attempts at foul-hooking canoes on the Wye in the Spring of my first salmon season, at Hay. That summer the missus said "the Moy's where you want to be" having done homework in T & S. So we got on the ferry and headed for Ballina. My first ever salmon came about half an hour after commencing operations with my 10' trout rod and #14 shrimp fly. I landed 5 sealiced grilse that afternoon, if you know the tidal Moy you'll know there's nothing amazing in that, but it sure made subsequent Rivers seem hard going. I'm glad as I now enjoy my salmon fishing more than ever. This year I think I've fished about 25 full days for maybe 4 salmon. And 2 seatrout. Funny how these things go

Used to pick up the odd salmon while fishing for sea trout when I was still in school. Music, and other vices took over after school, and the rods gathered dust for a few years. Then I got into trout fishing again. After a few years, I decided to try for Salmon and picked a fish up at the tail end of the first season I tried. Then the bank balance started to get hit hard as I moved onto double handed rods etc. It all depends on where you fish and the conditions. Catching a salmon is not a hard thing to do, as long as there are fish there and the conditions are right. Catching more salmon than anybody else in the same conditions deserves a pat on the back. If you are desperate to catch a salmon, fish a small spate stream under the correct conditions. However, it is more fun on a large river where the fish have plenty of room to rip your line out
