While this is good news for fishing, things must be put in perspective. It does not mean that we had the largest runs of fish since records began. Nowadays, there is more fishing pressure, and the tackle used is often more efficient at catching salmon. There are twice as many rods on most beats, and the beats are being fished year round. In years gone by, many rivers were only fished in spring, autumn, or both. A lot of rivers were hardly fished in the summer. Most of the nets are now bought out, and this allows most of the returning stock to enter the rivers, unlike in previous times, when only a portion of the fish got past the nets.

Well said both of you. the terminology used is rubbish. so,is the Brankin statement. Leading scientists have been telling the powers that be for many years that sea lice from fish cages was killing large numbers of salmon on our west coast, yet the Minister of the day Darling issued a statement saying that there was no scientific proof that this was so, just ask Richard Sheldon former headman at Fascally,he had been telling them the facts for years,.!

springer, I totaly agree with you, this gives people the wrong idea and could give the angling a bad name. We need to do all that we can to show people the respect and care that we handle salmon(and any other fish) with. Blair
