My wife has booked a family holiday in the first week of August with fishing available on the Balglassie beat of the South Esk. Can anyone help me out in terms of what the beat is like and/or tips on flies etc for the South Esk. Many thanks

not sure where the beat is exactly but if it is below the confluence of the prosen then it will be good
single handed fly work I should think

Thanks for that, it doesn't appear that it is a popular beat does it!

Purple Editor does well as does ally shrimp. Never heard of this beat but have fished the Brechin Angling Club water, Lower Kinnaird and the Town Water. The Town water is £3 a day and it's worth paying this just to fish the run at the top of the beat - even to go down it once!

Hello Clwydman - The Baglassie beat is a short 'middle' beat stretch (right bank only) and is on the opposite side to Upper Careston - I happen to be syndicate member of UC - which is just downstream of the Finavon waters. The bottom 'march' of this beat is about a couple of hundred yards above the confluence of the Noran Water and So. Esk (root out your o/s map and you will find it). Pools include the Common Pool, Balglassie Pool itself (at the farm), Careston Run's, Corner Pool (this is your best shot as the UC syndicate tend not to fish it owing to vegetation and general 'shape' of the pool), Pottie Pool and the Shallows (unfortunately you don't have access to the Noranmouth Pool itself - either bank !). There is certainly enough fishing for 2/3 rods. First week in August ?? Probably past the best of the S/T fishing. It will fish best between 4 - 7am and 7-10.30pm (dark O'clock) and the grilse should be around by then . IF you get water AND cloud cover it will fish ALL day - otherwise pace yourself and concentrate on fishing the best times . If you stick to this timescale then you can take 'her in-doors' and the rest of the family sightseeing or whatever and perhaps build up the brownie points. Flies : variations on a Silver Stoats Tail ranging from 1/2 " tubes and size 8 - 12 doubles / trebles. Anything with a silver or gold body (personal choice).....Teal Blue and Silver and variations thereof. Small Ally's Shrimps are also a good bet especially if the water is running off after a spate and there are definite signs of fresh fish about . Good luck and I will give you a 'shout' if I am about. It is good water for what you are paying and you will enjoy it. Regards.

Just read the date on your post - it was last year !! Not to worry - at least the info is there for future viewing. How did you get on BTW ? 1st week in August last year we got rain Monday and the grilse poured in on the back of that - I was fishing 'upstream'. Did you get any ??
