No use on the dinner table. Hopefully it would have the energy to spawn. I'd give it the kiss of life and put him back.

I think the question you are asking is referring to the 'freshness' of the fish. In which case it would be.
Although robmason correctly points out there are better one's - in terms of shape.

It looks to be a bit brown in the gills. I think it is all down to circumstance, what you have already taken for the table, what river it came from, how strong stocks are etc etc etc.
I put a similar one, a bit deeper in the body, back on friday. However, I have no real need of a fish for the table. I like to keep one for my boys birthday tea - he likes salmon, and maybe one other for the table.

A good rule is always return your first, then consider taking your second, but if you have the slightest doubt then return it.

Big fish, small fish, fat fish, slim fish, either way its survived one hell of a journey and should be treated with the same amount of respect as any other salmon. It seems, small, skinny, kelt like salmon have been commonplace this season, many opinions for this have been expressed on this forum and others. The general consensus is that the problem is related to either food available to the fish at sea or parasites inside the fish.Either way it would suggest genetics have little to do with the problem. To suggest taking a fish of this appearance would be no loss to the gene pool, in my opinion is wrong,I'm not saying it should have been returned,I'm not saying it should have been retained,I'm saying to suggest its not important one way or another because of its appearance is wrong.
