I will be fishing quite a bit on the Tay this first few months and most of the beats will be harling with the water being so big or fishing devon, tobys etc off the bank.My question is this should I stick to the fly even though the 'experts' tell me i am greatly reducing my chances of catching an elusive springer.

That depends on how much credence you give the gillie. I suppose if the water drops low enough you could have a go but the water I saw last week was impossible to fly fish effectively.

I have a timeshare on Benchil and Pitlochry (3rd wk Feb) and appreciate that it is not a classic fly fishing week.
However, i enjoy the banter when harling with the gillie and my friends i go with (hip flask keeping us warm!). I also don't mind a bit of spinning from the bank too. But i am essentially a fly fisherman. As long as you have the right kit for fly fishing (sunk line, brass tubes) then it can be as good as anything else if you find the best spots on the beat for it, and i certainly find it the most enjoyable method to fish.
So go for it,, get the fly rod out. I just like to split my time between the 3 main methods. Harling can get very boring though!
