Now that the close season is well and truly upon us and we revert to memories for our pleasure,or should i say sustenance to get us through this important period for the salmon.I thought i would enquire on the forum where you love to fish and why do you like it so much?Well for me here are some of my thoughts.
The sound of the rushing water and the smells of the countryside are still with us albeit faintly, perhaps the sounds of the birds, a woodpecker or chaffinch. The run of fresh fish announcing its presence as they come through the pool you are fishing and the anticipation that the line will tighten with a fierce snatch. My favourite sight this year was on a Tay beat where i was looking at an Ospreys nest at the top of a tree where the parents were attending the chicks, as i glanced down to the base of the tree at the waters edge there was a Roe deer drinking from the river and i thought to my self what a lucky sod i was to have seen that sight.
Well my favourite beat, and its a tough one,is Park on Deeside, followed closely by Kincardine and Borrowstone(as it was before the recent sale). I have never cast a fly on the Spey or Helmsdale so cannot say if i have really missed out,i am sure i have. The springers from the Dee in February/March take some beating.I caught a fish, about 14lb a couple of years back and as I looked at it I thought i had never seen a more magnificent animal,it was everything you could wish for,and as i returned it to the river i decided to stop fishing for the day,it was 4 pm but i didn't want to spoil the moment as i was totally satisfied with my days sport.I sat on the bank and had a dram with a howling sleet shower driving against my back and realised this is really what its all about.
The pools on the Dee like Park's pools, are something special, like the Durris stream where my friend took 2 fish on a riffled size 10 stoats tail this summer, the fly comes round a dream. Coopers,Bulwarksand the long pool just ooze character and the Greenbanks, first run through just fills you with so much anticipation.
As i am sure you will have guessed I am looking forward to next year and i wish you all tight lines for next season wherever it is you cast your line.
