As it seems to have forgotten how to rain in the Summer/Autumn down here in the Westcountry I’m thinking of having a week in October somewhere in Scotland this coming season. The usual suspects like Tweed, Ettrick, Annan and Nith don’t really float my boat. I’d prefer somewhere a bit more highland in character and a bit closer in size to the Westcountry rivers, the sort of thing where a 13 footer will cover it all. I’m not necessarily looking for a ten fish a day beat (and definitely not looking for ten fish a day rents!) just somewhere with a realistic chance of two or three for the week. I was thinking of one of the Ayrshire or Galloway rivers or maybe the Orchy. Has anyone on here got any experience of those rivers or suggestions for anywhere else. PM if you don’t want to reveal your hidden gems to all Cheers Andy

The Deveron; look at Franks site www.fishingthedeveron.co.uk A 13ft rod is ideal and the Deveron fishes well right up to Oct 31st with a good chance of a sealicer.

Mabe further than you intended going Andy, but I reckon you'd love the Thurso but it may very well be a tad on the steep side for your "purse" - I know it is for me except for the odd day here and there and I haven't made it up there for a couple of years I'd plump for the Don or the Deveron (I would ;D) as neither should break the bank, in fact if you've got 6 days I'd have 3 on each river...... both are about the size you'd like. Other than that (and this is off the top of my head) there is another river near the Solway you mght consider - the Stinchar, not sure how it fishes these days but the season runs until the 31st of October and it has a good reputation. Have a squint: www.stincharfishing.co.uk

The 3 mile stretch of the River Ness Angling Club is always worth a shot, with fresh fish to the last day.
Season ends on the 15th of October.
Grahams tackle shop in Inverness do a weekly ticket at a very reasonable price.

Thanks for those, it looks like a toss up between the Deveron/Don or a hidden gem that came to me via PM.
I think the Ness is a bit out of my league, I might be able to reach the lies with my beachcaster and 6oz lead!

I fished the Stinchar at the end of september. It sounds absolutely ideal for what you want (apart from the highland bit!). 13footer is absolutely perfect and providing there's water there are excellent runs until the last day. You'd have to book up soon though, we only got on due to a cancellation. Never managed any but there were plenty of fish in the pools, come the last hour of daylight it was a sight to behold (just when we had to leave). I've got contact numbers if you fancy it
