Simple, the various ghillies on the Tay Boards commitee are havingor have had the habitat enhancement done on the burns pertaining to their own beats done first !.Our beat has the Dowie burn coming into it at the lower end in sore need of enhancement and stocking,it was described as the perfect spawning area for salmon by the man sent to have a look at it. Having first asked about this about six years ago I am well aware that it "isnae ma turn"yet! However MAYBE it will be "ma turn " tomorrow but I sure aint holding my breath ! ! !

If you want to encourage the board on this front, it might be worth having a look at the results of the Wye & Usk Foundation's work on some of their tributaries. I haven't seen the latest report, but am told that fish counts are well up, and some streams that were previously empty are now holding stock. Not sure how much this is due to the fencing and clearance work (both of in-stream obstacles and tree canopies overhead), and how much to the liming to counteract the deadly acidification they were found to be suffering.
Of course, the Tay may face a different set of problems, but in general I very much believe that money is better spent on this sort of work than on a hatchery. I'd be surprised if the Tay didn't have more than enough spawners to stock the river to its maximum capacity (though of course they may not be perfectly distributed). Assuming that's so, surely it's better to spend money on increasing the capacity to hold fry and parr with habitat improvement, than just to chuck in more hatchery-bred fry and parr.

A pity I had'nt read your post before I met you today. We will meet again. As you witnessed today "it's no ma turn " putting it mildly ! A minimum cost solution laid at their feet and they just will not see it., beats me ,,,as the ghillie said !

How did the meeting at Dunkeld go, did you get your points answered or was it the usual spin that all is well in the Tay system,IMO the Board at present are absolutely useless give or take some members who have the best interests of the river at heart the rest should resign.

Sorry to harp on about the ericht system but I have phoned the board about a large tree which has fallen across the dalmunzie burn just above the spittal hotel[also spoke to Simon Winton , , land owner] as I had seen salmon backed up behind the said tree. That was two years ago, and the tree is still in the river ? The shee burn which runs down from the chair lift has no sheep fencing so the sheep can cross the burn and have seen this just after the annual sheep dipping ? The two areas mentioned above are designated fish sanctuaries where spring salmon spawn . The lower beats should remember that they catch ericht fish all year round and should apply some pressure to resolve these problems. . .foot note ,As i speak cattle are now standing in the shee burn !. . any thoughts , ?

there legs must be cold ;D seriously if we look after the natural spawning burns there will be less of a issue with stalking fish. a salmon makes a remarkable journey in life if and only returns for one thing and they need the environment to make it possible
