Can anyone tell me more on this beat as i'm thinking of booking a day in March? Is it good fly water? Haven't fished the Tay before and i'm looking for any suggestions as where to go for a day.
Thanks Webbie

Personally I have not yet had the chance to fish the Tay, but hope to do so before too long. I would suggest that you send Kercock a PM, he is possibly the best person to ask about beats on the Tay. Why not check out the Murthly1 website first. www.fishtay.co.uk/murthly1/river.asp?dom=FishTay

I've fished Murthly 1 quite a few times mainly in August. It is an excellent fly beat with typical long Tay pools. It is divided between the Upper and the Lower which are fished alternate days . The Lower is the better beat and includes the famous boat pool where the record salmon was caught by Miss Ballantine in 1922. The boat pool also has some of the most difficult wading that you are likely to encounter ! If you get the opportunity go for Murthly 2 which gives access to the Stenton Island pool one of the best on the Tay

I would opt for a day on Murthly No 1 beat but ask for a day on the Upper Beat, That is where a large percentage of the Spring fish come from.jaxcks can correct me if 'm wrong. What he said about Stenton is bang on, but by August that water is Timeshare country as far as I know. All of the Murthly area water is good, very good fly water. You will enjoy it there I'm sure, both the ghillies are good lads, either will keep you right.

I was there yesterday along with G Ritchie ,it wasn,t a bad day the water was at a surprisingly decent level given the amount of rain recently and with the sun out and the wind not too strong it was very pleasant .Nothing but kelts making an appearance though. It was nice to meet and fish alonside another forum member .I'm off to Kercock next saturday to fish with Dennis I can't wait

Definately worth a cast. Great bit of water. If you get the chance give sparrowmuir a throw. From the Glendelvine bridge right down to sparowmuir is a good bit for the spingers to hang around . Donald will keep you right.

I managed to loose a kelt and land a rawner. Didn't see any spring runners, but Tony the ghillie, (good company), has had two thus far, one at 20lbs and one at 7lbs. The river was clear, and running at 2'6" - Tony had suggested he would be happy to loose another foot off that for holding up springers - so anything around the 1' - 1'6" on the gauge would be spot on for spring sport.

Lovely beat - Tony Black is extremely knowledgable and will keep you right. Particular favourite pool' s of mine are the tail of the Tronach, The Burn, Black Rocks and, of course, the bottom Island Pool in low water. Excellent fly water and thoroughly recomended.
