Hi,
I was wandering if any of you have sent a fishing rod via royal mail or a courier recently. I believe that royal mail are a bit picky about sending rods...!!
I need to send my rod back to B&W and was hoping you could give me some advice, the cheaper the better to be honest.

If it is over 1.4m long ie-15ft x 3 sections, the royal mail won't look at it. To send by courier will cost £20+ depending on which 1 you use, worth shopping around. Hope this helps.

how can couriers justify that , the mind boggles, its not like they are only going to do one trip in that area to drop of the rod

I broke the top section of a rod I'd bought from Newmill Trout and Deer farm last year. They told me they would replace it and when I moaned about the postage (trying it on, really) they told me to snap it into bits about 6 inches long and put it in an envelope. I did and they replaced it. Good service! (Hellish rod though - I was hoping for a refund!)

I have posted rods in a length of plastic guttering down pipe the max length the PO takes is 5ft , the cost varies between £ 4.50 and £7.50.

Many rod makers have a flat rate delivery deal with a courier company. I don't know whether this would also apply to collections, but it might be worth asking B&W if they would quote you a price for collection.

I recently returned the bottom piece of a Loomis 15ft from Northern Ireland to a Loomis agebt in England to have an eye mended. Loomis charged a total of £25 including postage. I posted it in the rod tube for £5 with Parcelforce. I took a bit of a risk with the insurance though only taking £100 insurance. Worked out ok though and a great mend as well! Brendan

Thanks to all who contributed.
I struggled with local couriers and the PO and ended up phoning back B&W and they arranged for my rod to be collected from my home for a total of £16.
The woman at B&W has been very helpful and I commend the level of aftersales service.
