Just read an interesting artice by the Fisheries Research Services on Atlantic Salmon marine survival. The survey has been on-going since 1964 and has gathered lots of data and is therefore in my view, highly creditable. Although I didn't anticipate good news, I was very disturbed to find that the mortality rate for smolts at sea is currently estimated at 93%. The survey was conducted on the North Esk but these figures are certainly not confined to only that river. It is though in general that the figures indicated are pretty much widespread throughout all the European and North American Rivers. On a personal note, I'm glad that I'm employed on a river with an overall 71% release rate, as the fish obviously need all the help they can get. For anyone interested in reading the complete article, I have added the link below. It's certainly food for thought. www.frs-scotland.gov.uk/FRS.Web/Uploads/Documents/FW26Marine%20FH10.pdf
