Does anyone have a better alternative to taping the rod joints. I have read in the trout & salmon a while a go that some people put a small amount of wax on the male ferrule. Others said that a good push is enough. I have spoke to a few people that are reluctant to tape the joints of a brand new rod (especially expensive ones) because the tape can peel off some of the varnish. I dont want to do without the tape and then snap my new rod. Any ideas?

If you use 3M tape you won't take the varnish off your new rod.

I don't think modern salmon fly rods of reasonable quality need to be taped at the joints.

I add electical tape (about 2 inches) to the ends of each section of the rod. This tape stays there all the time. When i put the rod upto fish I add further tape to joint the sections. After fishing, this tape is removed from the top of the permanent tape. Seems to work. Hope this makes sense !

The stuff you need is 3M Self amalgamating tape. ( 3M make more different tapes than any company in the World ), you don't want normal insulation tape as this "could" damage your rod.
Self amalgamating tape is like a strip of thin rubber, you stretch it as you apply it and it welds to itself only, leaving your rod clean. It grips tightly though. Buy it from any decent electrical wholesaler in much bigger rolls than you can get it at a fishing shop and much cheaper.
The full name is '3M Scotch 23, self bonding tape'
