Following on from the recent personal best salmon thread, what's the worst or most unexpected fish you've caught? Mine's a 3" brownie on a size 8 peter ross one night last July on the Annan. It wasn't much bigger than the fly . Whoops, forget the question mark .

Unexpected - a 3lb flounder on fly from the tidal section of the Clwyd.
Worst - a slimy eel caught on fly at night while fishing for sea trout. Even worse, hooking numerous bats in the wing!

Tired of catching Dace after Dace while fishing for sea trout one night, I switched to a larger fly to try to remedy the situation. Result - a Gudgeon Also had two eels one night while sunk line fishing for sea trout. I've also had a few mullet at night, but don't mind those because they go like trains

I'm with you on the bats In terms of fish, probably while night fishing for sea trout on the Dee in Ballater where I hooked a beauty - was inexperienced and very enthusiastic - but, after it took me up and down the pool at high speed on a number of occasions, it turned out to be a 2lb brownie that was foul-hooked. Still remember the disappointment

3lb Chub on the lower Endrick a few years ago. Hit the Alleys shrimp like a ton of bricks and stripped about 20 yards of line of in the first run. Though I was into a good grilse, then sawa gold flash under the surface, so immediately though it was a very good brown (loch) trout. As the water was coloured and it was dusk, I didn't realise it was a Chub until it was in the net on the bank. I wasn't too chuffed !!
Put the fish back, although it's still probably chomping its way through the salmon parr and about 10 pounds now. Chub and other alien species got into the Loch Lomond system by Pike anglers using these fish as livebait. This practice is now banned on the system, thankfully.

Remember many moons ago, around 1975 going on a miners club outing to the Annan and watching the older guys giving it laldy with their live minnows etc for the big trout and hopefully a poached salmon.I was 15 at the time and this was my first trip away from my local river valley in Lasswade, Midlothian, where we caught little brownies on brandlings or maggots, dipped in vanilla essence, as the trout or troot as we called them were fussy on the Esks. One of the locals used liquid licorice essence to flavour his bait as he said that was even better for the beef maggot.(amazing what we resorted to before we knew what pheromones were!)
Anyway I was a young lad looking up to all these men who hired a bus for the trip and there were about 30 fishers getting dropped off at regular intervals who would cover the river Annan from top to bottom.I guess you could say they were poaching as they never had permits although in these days it wasnt something a 15 year old novice would think about.
The day was rainy en route but brightened up by late morning and some of the lads were catching nice brownies on the jigged live minnow and some on the gadger, i think the stonefly larvae. There were some salmon caught but this was like the dark arts, only to be discussed by those of an age that knew about such things or were allowed out of there beds past midnight. I can even recall drinking breaker malt liquor on the bus and some Newcastle brown ale as it was the done thing by the older lads as well as scanning some soft porn mags which to a young lad were tremendously exciting to look at.
Anyway back to the thread title, and as a slight detour i will say the fish wasnt mine but i was there at the time it was caught, and its a hell of a funny event.I was fishing the bottom of a pool which was on a bend and around at the next pool a lad called Stewarty (surname)was fishing and up went the shout " I have hooked a clonker,i'm sure its a salmon".Well that was it for me! a Salmon!! christ how i yearned to see a salmon for the first time, connected to a fly,Wow man alive.I threw my rod down and ran as fast as my thigh waders would allow down river and round the bend where there were some high bushes and reeds. I could hear the reel screeming and Stewarty cursing as the fish was giving a great account of itself.I was getting close now and heard the shout " What the f**k is that?" I was sure he had lost the fish but no, there Stewarty was with this great silver fish, beached on pea sized gravel,i swear he was in tears as it wasn't a salmon nor was it a sea trout.I didnt know what it was but it was big and silver with stick out lips like Mick Jagger.Just then an older lad appeared,Bob Naples i think his name was and he advised thingyie that he had caught a seven pound chub,on the fly.Well the guy was distraught as he had dreams it was a salmon and boys being boys he got ribbed all the way home on the bus.I think this is a wee tale worth telling and it gave me a good laugh just remembering the one day i went on a fishing trip with the local miners club.

Good grief! Man sunbathing by river gets attacked by large fish! Is that a catfish or one of those amazonian fish seen on Jungle Hooks?

Most unexpected was a salmon on the tweed, which I eventually lost. I was spinning (sorry to those who may be offended) and had stopped to light a cigarette (ditto re offence!). The rod was held between my knees, with about 3 ft of line hanging from the tip, attached to a flying c (ditto!). After the customary rooting thro pockets for smoking paraphenalia, I was about to light up when the rod bent between my knees as a fish took.
Needless to say I have tried the same spot many times with fly and spinners but it seems that that fish was a one off!
My worst fish was an 18 1/2 lb rainbow from a stew pond at the age of about 13. Even then it just seemed farcical.
I reckon the best fish is yet to come!

The most unexpected for me was a shad around 3 1/2lb on my local Never ever heard of one entering the river, let alone being caught.A few eel's and flounder hooked fair and square in the mouth. One of the lads once foul hooked a huge lamprey.I got to be honest...those bloody things put the sh1ts up me,ugly buggers. DAZ.
